The announcement of Chrono Trigger's anniversary fuels anticipation for a possible remake.
Square Enix
Today marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger's release, and Square Enix is commemorating this occasion with announcements regarding the future of the franchise and a series of events over the coming days. The first event is a 33-hour live performance that will be streamed on YouTube starting at 7 PM PT on March 13 and ending around 4 AM PT on March 15.
Square Enix shared the celebration news via a post on X, stating, "Today marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger’s release in 1995…In honor of this milestone, we will be unveiling various projects that extend beyond the gaming world over the next year as a token of our gratitude to all who have experienced Chrono Trigger."
Unsurprisingly, the mention of "various projects" has sparked speculation about a potential remake. Fans have long wished to see a new iteration of Chrono Trigger, possibly in the HD-2D style reminiscent of Octopath Traveler.

Meanwhile, its sequel, Chrono Cross, was launched as The Radical Dreamers Edition in 2022, featuring enhancements like upscaled graphics, a fast-forward mode, and various other upgrades.
That said, many games evoke a similar sentiment as Chrono Trigger. Sabotage Studio's Sea of Stars is notably inspired by the game, and it has a new DLC set to release soon.
Square Enix indicates that its projects will extend "beyond the world of games" in the upcoming year, which could suggest anything from an anime adaptation to a board game or trading card game.
While there is no guarantee for a remake, the 30th anniversary of a game often provides an excellent opportunity for such a release. Chrono Trigger has left a lasting mark on the RPG genre, and it would be
