Aventon introduces the Abound LR, a smart e-bike designed for heavy cargo.

Aventon has introduced the Abound LR e-bike, a longer version of the Abound SR and the original Aventon Abound cargo e-bike series. In a pre-launch press briefing for the Abound LR in February, Aventon described the Abound SR as a versatile utility and cargo bike, while the Abound LR is positioned as a cargo solution for families and potentially a substitute for a second vehicle.

The new long-rack LR variant carries over the technical specifications and ACU-based smart features of the short-rack SR, with the main differences being its length and weight. The Abound LR weighs 8 pounds more and is 7.1 inches longer than the SR. The two new models can be compared to the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, designed for similar purposes, with one simply being the longer option.

      Abound LR features and capabilities

The 88-pound Abound LR is somewhat heavy for pedaling without power assistance, except on flat, even terrains, and particularly if you're looking to exercise. I weigh 160 pounds, and while riding the Abound LR in Long Beach, California, the 80 Nm of torque helped it accelerate well at traffic signals. The Abound LR is classified as a Class 2 e-bike, which caps the pedal assistance or throttle power to a maximum of 20 mph.

The powertrain consists of a 36V, 750-watt rear hub motor paired with a rechargeable 36V 20Ah Lithium-ion battery that provides 708 Wh of electric power. Aventon claims the Abound LR can achieve a maximum range of 60 miles, though reaching that distance typically requires using the lowest pedal assist setting and maintaining a slower speed. Various factors, such as cargo weight, speed, road conditions, incline, and temperature, can influence the range of the e-bike.

Aventon has thoughtfully equipped the Abound LR with a torque sensor that adjusts the power assistance based on your pedaling effort, rather than your speed. The Ride Tune feature within the Aventon app enables you to customize the pedal assist levels to match your preferences. Both features enhance the efficiency and natural feel of pedaling with power support.

With a payload capacity of 440 pounds, including a maximum of 143 pounds on the rear rack, it's reassuring that the Abound LR is fitted with hydraulic disc brakes featuring 180mm front and 203mm rear rotors.

The LR accommodates riders between 4 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 6 inches tall. This broad range is made possible by adjusting the handlebar height, angle, and seat height. A standard seat suspension post and an adjustable front fork suspension help cushion impacts from bumps and uneven surfaces.

A center stand and mesh rear wheel guards facilitate easier and safer loading of cargo or children. The Abound LR comes equipped with a rear rack, fenders, footboards, and a compact storage bag that fits into the frame behind the seat tube. While the storage bag isn't large enough for most helmets, it can hold rain gear, snacks, and tools.

What makes the Abound LR so smart?

The Aventon Abound LR is the company’s third e-bike featuring the ACU. The Aventon Control Unit utilizes GPS and 4G connectivity to improve the e-bike’s security and usability, including support for over-the-air (OTA) system updates and maintenance. Key benefits of the ACU, which is also included in the Abound SR and Level.3 commuter e-bikes, consist of a keyless battery, a startup passcode option, GPS tracking, geofencing, an onboard alarm, and an electronic center stand lock.

Although I didn't carry cargo during my rides in Long Beach, I’m eager to conduct a thorough review of the Aventon Abound LR soon. The Abound LR is currently available for $1,999 at Aventon dealers and on the company’s website.
