Just over 98 years ago, Walt Disney and animator Ub Iwerks jointly created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the cartoon forerunner of Mickey Mouse. Although Oswald has not fully regained the popularity he had during his original run from 1927 to 1929, Disney is set to support this classic character significantly with a new original series on Disney+.

According to Deadline, Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, will write and produce the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series. It remains uncertain whether the show will be animated or a combination of live-action and animation, similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Regardless, Favreau has extensive experience with both formats, having directed the remakes of The Lion King and Jungle Book, as well as the first two Iron Man films that helped shape the MCU. He has also directed The Mandalorian and is working on the next Star Wars movie, which is scheduled for release in May 2026.

Disney's 26 Oswald shorts were initially distributed by Universal Pictures, but Disney lost control of the character despite the series' success due to not owning the rights. Disney and Iwerks later achieved greater success with Mickey Mouse, while Oswald remained unused in Universal’s archives for many years.

In 2006, at the urging of CEO Bob Iger, Disney struck a deal with NBC/Universal to get the rights to Oswald back in exchange for sportscaster Al Michaels. Since then, Oswald has been gradually incorporated into Disney theme parks, complete with merchandise and costumed cast members for meet-and-greet photo opportunities.

One reason Iger wanted Oswald back in the Disney fold was for the 2010 video game Epic Mickey, which was recently remastered as Epic Mickey Rebrushed. In that game, Mickey finds himself in a wasteland where he learns that Oswald and other neglected characters have been forgotten. Due to their shared creator, Mickey and Oswald became unofficial brothers, reconciling before joining forces in the sequel, Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

A new Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short was released in 2023, but the upcoming series marks the most significant role the character has had since his return. However, Oswald has also entered the public domain, enabling filmmakers to create an unauthorized horror slasher titled Oswald: Down the Rabbit Hole.
