Later this year, Avatar: Fire and Ash will advance the story that writer and director James Cameron began in 2009 with Avatar. However, Cameron revealed that the third installment in the series was not part of his original plan for three sequels. Instead, he divided Avatar: The Way of Water into two separate films due to the overwhelming amount of content in the script.
“In essence, we had too many brilliant ideas condensed into the first act of the second movie,” Cameron explained to Empire. “The [film] was progressing like a bullet train, and we weren't focusing enough on character development. So I stated, ‘We need to split it.'”
To assist in shaping the narrative of the films, Cameron assembled a writers' room that included Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno. During the interview with Empire, Silver commented on the advantages of developing Fire and Ash as a standalone film.
“The characters required more space,” Silver remarked. “These films encompass much more than just a gripping plot and stunning visuals. These are genuine characters.”
“These characters embody aspects of ourselves—our youth, our experiences as parents, the mistakes we've made, and likely still make as parents,” Cameron added. “For instance, Jake is a tough [bleep]. He’s quite strict with his kids. That’s reflective of me.”
Cameron also mentioned that Fire and Ash "will actually be somewhat longer than [The Way of Water]," which had a runtime of 3 hours and 12 minutes in 2022. Production designer Ben Procter recently hinted that Fire and Ash would feature “an epic battle” between the Na’vi and the human invaders, on a much grander scale than the confrontation at the conclusion of The Way of Water.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters on December 15.

Disney+ and Max will begin streaming Avatar: The Way of Water in June.
In December, director James Cameron demonstrated that audiences were eager to return to the world of Avatar on the big screen with Avatar: The Way of Water. The film was not only a massive hit, grossing $2.32 billion worldwide (making it the third-highest-grossing film of all time), but it also defied the trend of rapid digital releases. However, the wait is nearly over. Disney+ announced that The Way of Water will have its streaming premiere on June 7.

Why James Cameron’s proposed Terminator reboot shouldn’t happen.
Director James Cameron recently shared his idea for rebooting the Terminator franchise... again. In an interview on the podcast "SmartLess," Cameron stated: "If I were to make another Terminator film and perhaps attempt to relaunch that franchise, which is under discussion but not yet decided, I would focus much more on the AI aspect than just rogue robots."
While this concept seems intriguing, the Terminator franchise has already undergone multiple reboots. Even if this proposed sequel could address the shortcomings of its numerous predecessors, there are many reasons why it may be time to retire the iconic sci-fi series.

The best characters in Avatar: The Way of Water, ranked.
As each day goes by, Avatar: The Way of Water continues to show that the first Avatar had more longevity than many expected. The film has been quite successful financially and has also received positive feedback from both critics and audiences.
While the movie's stunning special effects are certainly a highlight, The Way of Water also features several memorable characters, some of whom make their first appearance in this installment. With a runtime of over three hours, the film allows ample opportunity for multiple characters to have complete arcs, but these were the seven best characters, whether newcomers or returning ones, that appeared in the film.
