Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
The 97th Academy Awards are slated for Sunday, March 2, and it’s understandable if they have you in the mood for a movie night. Historically, the Oscars have mostly honored dramas and romantic films with their highest accolades, but as science fiction narratives have become more thought-provoking and relevant, these films have gradually moved beyond technical awards and into the Best Picture category. A prime example is Dune: Part Two, which received five nominations, including one for Best Picture. Shortly thereafter, she spoke with Deadline to dispel these retirement speculations and clarify her future intentions. "The truth is, and I want to make this clear, I am not retiring," Kennedy stated. "I will never retire from making movies. I will die making movies. That’s the most important thing to clarify. I am not retiring. What’s happening at Lucasfilm is that I have been discussing with both Bob and Alan for quite some time about what potential succession might look like."
25 years of Oscar Best Picture snubs, by year
To start, I must confess that I haven’t watched the Oscars broadcast for the past four years. (Just to clarify, I found out about the whole Will Smith incident the following morning, and I was just as indifferent to it then as I would have been on the night of the show.) Why have I opted out of this seemingly unifying American cultural event for an entire presidential cycle? Because there are few things that provoke my ire more than an Academy Awards ceremony. For decades, Academy voters, influenced by opportunistic awards season campaigns and motivated to prioritize their own studios’ interests over legacy and public sentiment, have repeatedly granted awards to the wrong individuals, rewarding mediocrity while neglecting true artistry.
