Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has introduced a new puzzle game

The New York Times has launched a new title in its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle, and this time it focuses on math. Digits challenges players to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You can currently play its beta for free online.

In Digits, players are given a target number to match. They are presented with six numbers and can add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to get as close to the target as possible. It’s not required to use all the numbers, making this game a true test of your math skills as you combine numbers to create the right equations.

Players will receive a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating for being within 10, and a one-star rating for coming within 25 of the target number. Presently, players can also explore five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an engaging number-based game that should appeal to curious minds who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.

In an article introducing Digits and outlining The New York Times Games team’s development process, The Times mentions that the team will utilize this free beta to troubleshoot and evaluate whether the game should advance into a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." So, enjoy Digits while you can, as The New York Times may decide to move on from this project if it doesn't receive the anticipated response.

Digits' beta is currently available to play for free on The New York Times Games' website.

Wordle’s significant year: New York Times analyzes the phenomenon's major moments in 2022

If you logged onto Twitter exactly a year ago, you likely remember the flood of gray, yellow, and green boxes filling your feed. Although it launched in 2021 and gained widespread popularity in December, Wordle became an inescapable cultural sensation in early 2022 that captured attention everywhere except among those who muted it. It was a rare success story for a game that could appeal broadly thanks to its simple elegance.

Wordle’s success would rise as quickly as its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced its acquisition of the puzzle game from creator Josh Wardle in a confidential, low-seven-figure deal — a surprising move that almost overshadowed Sony's announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours earlier. This acquisition sparked concern among fans, who feared that a corporate takeover of such an independent game might compromise its essence.
