Move over, Wordle: The New York Times has a new puzzle game
The New York Times has rolled out its next title in the Games catalog following Wordle's sustained success, and it revolves around math. Digits invites players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently try its beta version for free online.
In Digits, players must match a target number using six available numbers with the freedom to add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to get as close to the target as possible. Not all provided numbers need to be utilized, presenting a challenge as players combine them to form the right equations. Players earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating if they are within 10, and a one-star rating if they get within 25 of the target number. Presently, players can tackle five different puzzles featuring increasingly larger numbers. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-based challenge that should appeal to those who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other titles from The New York Times such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article introducing Digits and explaining The New York Times Games team's development process, The Times states that the team will leverage this free beta to address bugs and determine if it warrants transitioning into a more active development phase where coding and design fine-tuning takes place. Play Digits while it's available, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if it doesn't receive the anticipated response.
Digits' beta is available to play for free now on The New York Times Games' website.

Although it launched in 2021 and gained popularity that December, Wordle transformed into a cultural sensation in early 2022, becoming inescapable outside of a muted words list. It was an exceptional success story in gaming, capable of captivating a wide audience due to its elegant simplicity.
Wordle's success escalated along with its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced it had acquired the puzzle game from its creator Josh Wardle in an undisclosed, low-seven-figure deal—an unexpected move that nearly overshadowed Sony's announcement of acquiring Destiny 2 developer Bungie just hours earlier. This acquisition raised concerns among fans, who worried that a corporate takeover of such an independent game could
