AMD's RX 9070 XT might be set to make a similar pricing error as before.
AMD is poised to reveal more information about the anticipated RX 9070 XT, which may compete with some of the top graphics cards in the mainstream segment. Beyond the specifications, discussions around the GPU's pricing have been generating significant buzz. Recently, a well-known leaker shared insights suggesting that AMD might slightly underprice Nvidia.
David Huang on X (formerly Twitter) indicated that the card will be priced at $699. This comment came as a response to another user who speculated a price of $649. According to VideoCardz, AMD intends to place its new flagship in the sub-$700 category, lending credibility to these rumors.
If the $699 price is accurate, it could position the RX 9070 XT in a curious, though somewhat precarious, spot in the market. Nvidia launched the RTX 5070 Ti at $750, with the RTX 5070 expected to follow at $550. Meanwhile, the RX 9070 XT is rumored to perform between these two GPUs, making a $700 price point understandable but perhaps not optimal.
AMD's strategy of pricing its product just below Nvidia's was observed with RDNA 3, though its effectiveness can be questioned. Historically, AMD has ended up reducing prices further over time, with GPUs providing excellent performance per dollar ultimately becoming customer favorites.
While slightly underpricing Nvidia can be advantageous, it may not be sufficient to attract gamers to AMD. Nvidia has established itself as the dominant player in the GPU market, and many gamers instinctively choose Team Green when purchasing a new card. AMD might require more than just a $50 price difference to entice these gamers.
Additionally, as is often the case with AMD, the presence of readily available RDNA 3 cards at significantly reduced prices may hinder the impact of RDNA 4. The RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, and even the RX 7900 GRE could serve as alternatives to AMD's upcoming GPU, although the latter is reportedly underperforming in benchmarks.
However, AMD could still outperform Nvidia—even with a $700 flagship. Both the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 could be overpriced or hard to obtain for some time post-launch, presenting challenges for the RTX 50-series. If AMD can ensure better availability and maintain MSRP pricing, even a $700 tag might suffice.
While these insiders on Twitter have previously shared accurate info about upcoming releases, it's wise to remain cautious until confirmation arrives. The official reveal is set for February 28 during a special event.
