It’s time for another update from DC Studios. Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran shared news about the company’s forthcoming projects during a press meeting on February 21. This announcement comes two years after Gunn and Safran rebooted the DC Universe and unveiled plans for Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Starting with the film sector, Safran expressed DC’s goal to produce two live-action films and one animated film each year. Recently, Daniel Craig stepped away from Sgt. Rock, the upcoming superhero film directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Justin Kuritzkes. According to Variety, Safran mentioned that DC “never met with Daniel,” while Gunn remarked that the pair “never announced the project.”

Safran also mentioned that Matt Reeves has yet to finish the complete script for The Batman Part II, which has shifted its release from October 2026 to October 2027. Regarding the Batman Epic Crime Saga, the DC executives are uncertain if The Penguin will make a return for the second season. Batman: The Brave and the Bold is actively in development, and Robert Pattinson is expected to portray that version of the Caped Crusader.

Safran confirmed that Clayface will be directed by James Watkins from a script by Mike Flanagan, with casting already underway. Alan Tudyk, who voices the character in Harley Quinn and Creature Commandos, will not feature in the live-action horror film. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is halfway through its production, while Ana Nogueira is still working on a script for Teen Titans. Swamp Thing remains in development with James Mangold, and The Authority is still a while away.

The television lineup includes Peacemaker season 2, debuting in August. The Viola Davis-led series Waller is still in the works following a challenging production period. Active projects include Lanterns, set for release in 2026, and an animated Blue Beetle series that continues from the live-action film. Paradise Lost and Booster Gold are under development, although the latter has moved on from its original showrunner.

Finally, animation stays a top priority for Gunn and Safran. Dynamic Duo, a film centered on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, is in pre-production. Three animated series aimed at younger audiences have been approved, namely My Adventures with Green Lantern, DC Super Powers, and Starfire.

DC Studios will soon turn its attention to promoting and marketing Superman, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Peacemaker season 2 is officially complete. Series creator and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn announced that filming has concluded for the superhero series.

“And that is a WRAP on #Peacemaker season 2, including our last remaining actors Steve Agee, Tim Meadows, Sol Rodriguez & Brandon Stanley (& our DP Sam McCurdy pictured here moments after the last shot),” Gunn shared on X. "Thanks to our entire cast & crew who made this a wonderful experience. My relief to have a break from shooting after ten months straight is mixed with how much I’ll miss all of you!”

A few days prior, Gunn dedicated a social media post to Peacemaker stars John Cena and Jennifer Holland, announcing the completion of their scenes. He highlighted a particularly enjoyable day of shooting and expressed gratitude to the people of Savannah for their hospitality.

James Gunn addresses claims that certain characters are too niche for the DC Universe

Interest has been gradually building for over a year regarding James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC Universe. While the multimedia franchise inspired by DC Comics has yet to officially launch, that moment is anticipated with the premiere of the animated Suicide Squad spinoff series, Creature Commandos, set to debut on December 5 on Max. Despite this, Gunn faces criticism from some comic book readers and superhero enthusiasts, prompting him to respond to specific comments.

Gunn addressed this when a fan argued on Threads that his decision to approve projects about "niche" characters like Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing suggests he's catering only to hardcore comic book readers instead of the general audience. In his reply, Gunn stated, "Don’t put Swamp Thing in the corner. That’s a project in development we’ve actually announced, and he’s an incredibly well-known character with not only some of the greatest comics of all time but [also] a successful film series and his own TV show, a distinction shared by only a small handful of DC characters."
