The LG G4 stands out as one of the finest TVs we've tested in the studio this year. Regardless of whether you have the top-tier model or any of LG's other offerings like the C4 or B4, we aim to assist you in achieving the best and most appealing picture for your viewing preferences.

Prepare to fine-tune your LG TV settings, eliminating features that might be hindering its performance while maximizing brightness.

      Disable these features now

Certain features might limit your TV's performance, and we suggest you turn them off.

      Digital Trends

Our first recommendation is to deactivate the Energy Saving mode. (While we are environmentally conscious, we also prioritize your viewing experience.) To prevent your TV from restricting its brightness, disable this feature. On your remote, press the Settings button, then the gear icon in the screen’s top corner. Navigate to General, then Energy Saving, and finally Energy Saving Step. We advise turning this off completely.

For Picture Settings, disable the Eye Comfort Mode. Access this by pressing the Settings button on your remote, then in the quick menu, scroll down to Eye Comfort Mode and switch it off. This is commonly referred to as the Reduce Blue Light setting, which can also be found by selecting the gear icon, navigating to Picture, then Advanced Settings, and finally Reduce Blue Light. When enabled, this setting can make the display appear overly warm.

Set the ideal picture mode and brightness

The simplest way to select picture modes is by pressing the Settings button on your remote and navigating to Picture Mode, where you can cycle through all available options. Alternatively, choose Picture (as mentioned above) and then Select Mode. Cinema and Filmmaker Mode are excellent choices.

If you are knowledgeable about color settings, two Expert modes are available. However, for regular viewing of shows and movies, we recommend steering clear of the Vivid, Standard, and Sports settings, as they tend to oversaturate colors, resulting in an unnatural display.

When adjusting brightness, be sure to set it for both SDR (standard dynamic range) and HDR (high dynamic range).

      Digital Trends

For SDR content brightness, access the Home Screen with your remote, press the Settings button, and select OLED Pixel Brightness. Any brightness changes made here will apply to all SDR content.

      Digital Trends

To modify HDR brightness settings, use content with HDR enabled from a streaming service (if unsure, YouTube is a good option — we enjoy Eugene Belsky’s videos). An indicator in the top right corner will confirm that you are viewing HDR content.

Next, follow the same steps as for adjusting SDR brightness (you'll see "Picture Mode" now labeled as "HDR Picture Mode"). Choose your desired level in OLED Pixel Brightness, and this adjustment will affect HDR content.

      Digital Trends

To optimize your TV experience, you can also adjust the Peak Brightness. From Settings, select Picture, then Advanced Settings, and Brightness. Scroll to Peak Brightness and set it to High. This setting influences the maximum brightness displayed on-screen, which impacts the overall picture quality. Additionally, you can increase the brightness to 100 if it’s comfortable for your eyes.

      Smoother motion and device connectivity

Adjustments for motion smoothing are largely a matter of personal preference; you may notice some changes while others might not.

      Digital Trends

To modify settings on your LG TV, start by accessing the Advanced Settings menu. Select Clarity and go to TruMotion, designed to enhance image clarity for fast-moving scenes. We suggest turning this off. Instead, especially for films and shows, consider enabling the Real Cinema setting, which alters the frame rate to match the movie. Since motion clarity is subjective, feel free to experiment to find your ideal setup.

You can also tweak settings to facilitate the use of external devices. If you’re connecting a soundbar, Blu-ray player, or gaming console, streamline their operation through your TV by enabling HDMI-CEC. Press the Settings button on your remote, then the gear icon on the screen. Navigate to General, then External Devices. Select HDMI Settings and ensure SimpLink HDMI-CEC is turned on. This allows you to control these devices via your TV remote.

With these adjustments, your LG TV will be better suited to fulfill all of your viewing needs.

If you own a different brand of TV and wish to make similar adjustments, modern TVs typically offer comparable features to LG, although they may have different labels that can be perplexing. We also provide guidance for Samsung, Sony, Hisense, TCL, and Panasonic models.
