      Meta has announced new limitations for teenagers using Facebook and Instagram in the U.S., which may have broader implications beyond the country. These new measures come after several settlements related to claims that social media platforms put children at risk, with the company potentially facing costs of up to $18 billion.

      Currently, these new regulations will only affect users in the U.S. They include restrictions on how much time young users can spend on Meta's apps and limitations on their ability to disable certain safety features, as reported by Bloomberg. The company intends to monitor these changes and continue discussions with governments outside the U.S.

      Meta is enhancing restrictions on teen usage.

      The most significant alteration is that it will be more difficult for teens to bypass safety measures. Meta's agreement introduces a default time limit of two hours per day for Facebook and Instagram, which can only be overridden with parental consent. This limit applies cumulatively across both platforms, regardless of whether the same individual has multiple accounts.

      Meta is also launching a default Night Mode, which prevents access to important features from midnight until 6 a.m. During these hours, teens will be unable to post or access areas such as Feed, Stories, Explore, or Reels. There will be additional restrictions during school hours, with notifications muted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. by default, though direct messages and alerts regarding account safety will still come through. Regular reminders will occur every 15 minutes of continuous activity and when daily use hits 60 and 90 minutes.

      The company will enable teens to opt for a non-personalized feed, turn off autoplay, and hide like and reaction counts by default. Meta stated it will strengthen its age verification tools to identify users under 13 and detect teens who misrepresent their age as adults.

      Other countries are observing the developments closely.

      The U.S.-only implementation is significant, as regulators in other nations are currently considering stricter regulations for children and teens. Bloomberg notes that officials from over 20 countries are contemplating or have proposed restrictions on social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat for young users.

      The UK is paying particular attention. Pat McFadden, the UK secretary of state for work and pensions, emphasized that this issue is crucial for both parents and governments, questioning if children in the UK could face lesser protections than those in the U.S. The financial implications are also vital; Meta's settlement includes a payment of around $18 billion, a substantial portion of which will be distributed to participating states over a period of 10 years. The nature of the restrictions may become stricter and broader if other major platforms adopt similar measures, according to the company.

      Matthew Bergman, founder of the Social Media Victims Law Center, referred to the settlement as a "bellwether for the rest of the world," suggesting that Meta and similar platforms should be held accountable internationally. The immediate effect on teenagers is clear: less unregulated scrolling, fewer late-night alerts, and increased parental oversight. The greater challenge for Meta will be determining if these changes can significantly influence how younger users engage with its platforms—and whether regulators in other regions will call for even stricter regulations.
