      Game of Thrones enthusiasts have attempted to rule Westeros before, but never quite like this. During the Opening Night Live event of Gamescom 2026, PlaySide Studios presented the first gameplay trailer for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, an officially licensed real-time strategy game set to launch on PC via Steam in early 2027.

      What can players expect from War for Westeros gameplay?

      Originally announced at Summer Game Fest 2025, the game was briefly showcased with a cinematic trailer. This new footage provides our first genuine insight into the gameplay experience.

      Players can choose sides, commanding House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the feared White Walkers as they battle for control of the Seven Kingdoms. Unlike the series, where the outcome was predetermined, players will engage in the conflicts that ultimately determine who seizes the Iron Throne.

      The trailer also features many recognizable characters, such as Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Robb Stark, Jaime Lannister, Tywin Lannister, and even the Night King, each with special abilities that can influence the course of battles. Ghost and Grey Wind are also shown fighting alongside their Stark companions.

      Success in the game hinges on making tactical decisions, training units, collecting resources, constructing buildings, and gradually taking over enemy territories. Each faction plays uniquely, complete with its own armies, buildings, and mechanics inspired by its portrayal in the series.

      Is there a beta for Game of Thrones: War for Westeros?

      PlaySide has announced an upcoming beta test, with details on participation to be revealed later this year. Signing up for the official newsletter now may be beneficial for those seeking early access.

      War for Westeros wasn't the only major announcement at Opening Night Live. Krafton introduced DED.NET, an unusual roguelite shooter from the 1990s derived from PUBG. Meanwhile, HoYoverse surprised audiences with Nodus Fall, a dark fantasy RPG that deviates from its typical offerings.
