ChatGPT Plus is experiencing throttling once more, and it's supposedly for your own benefit.

ChatGPT Plus has reinstated its irritating five-hour limit.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers recently experienced a brief period without the five-hour Work and Codex restrictions, but OpenAI decided that was excessive. As of August 25, OpenAI is reimposing the five-hour cap on ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus members. This limit had been temporarily lifted on July 12, allowing users to utilize their overall weekly allowance instead.

Before you express your frustration online, it’s important to understand that regular ChatGPT conversations will not cease after five hours. This update specifically impacts the more resource-intensive Work and Codex features designed for handling longer tasks.

OpenAI is moderating usage a bit.

Starting tomorrow, the five-hour limit will return for Plus accounts across ChatGPT Work and Codex. I previously mentioned this but postponed it. This measure is necessary because (a) the five-hour limit helps distribute the demand on our computing resources, enabling us to maintain a generous plan— Tibo (@thsottiaux) August 25, 2026

OpenAI's lead engineer, Thibault Sottiaux, provided two reasons for reinstating the limit. Firstly, managing heavy usage within five-hour intervals helps predict demand on OpenAI's infrastructure while allowing for comparatively generous weekly allowances.

Secondly, OpenAI noted that Plus subscriptions include many casual and newer users who may unknowingly deplete a significant portion of their weekly quota during one extended session, leading to confusion about their temporary access restrictions. Consequently, users must monitor two limits: using up the five-hour allowance means waiting for it to reset, while depleting the weekly limit doesn’t result in an immediate reset. Additionally, users can opt to purchase extra usage credits rather than merely waiting for the timer to renew.

Paying more frees you up—at least for now.

There is some positive news for those with OpenAI's higher-priced subscriptions. In his recent tweet, Sottiaux confirmed that the five-hour restriction will remain lifted for the $100 and $200 Pro subscriptions for the upcoming months. Those subscribers will continue to use their weekly allowances without facing this additional five-hour limitation.

This decision seems intentional, clarifying the distinction between Plus and Pro tiers, especially for users utilizing ChatGPT as a serious work or coding resource. While the restriction was removed in July, that freedom appears to have been temporary.
