**Quick Summary**
As I approach fifty, a recurring humorous topic in conversations is that infamous night when the smoke alarm battery died at 3:00 am, causing a chirp that disrupted sleep, followed by a frantic search to pinpoint the faulty alarm. In my opinion, smoke and carbon monoxide detection devices seem to be a category where no brand excels. They tend to be either excessively complicated or too inexpensive to provide any useful features. Remember Google’s Nest Protect? Discontinued. Then there's First Alert's $130 SC5, which boasted voice alerts, phone notifications, and an app. Meanwhile, standards for smoke alarms continue to evolve along with the technology itself. The UL 217 smoke alarm standard added a cooking-nuisance immunity test in its 9th edition, and NFPA 72 (2025), effective January 1, 2025, in certain jurisdictions, requires alarms within 20 feet of cooking appliances to meet the requirements of the 8th edition or later. This means alarms installed near kitchens must be able to differentiate burnt toast from a legitimate fire, as the alarm you remove in frustration could very well be the one that fails next year. The SC07 (as well as the SC07-W interconnected pack) is priced at $36.99 for one unit and $269 for a 6-pack, featuring a photoelectric smoke sensor, an electrochemical CO sensor, a sealed 10-year lithium battery, and a backlit LCD that displays the actual carbon monoxide concentration in parts per million without forcing you to interpret chirp patterns (assuming you can see the LCD from a height of 10 feet). It lacks an app, hub, subscription, or Wi-Fi that may become outdated in four years.
The SC07 impresses me primarily with its price and fundamental features. Conversely, its potential drawback could be that it's a standalone unit, which may not suit everyone’s needs. However, there is good news: the SC07-W is available in a 5-pack and connects all units to each other. So, if you only need a single unit for one room, the SC07 is perfect; if you're replacing multiple alarms in your home, the W version would be the better choice.

The appearance of smoke alarms has remained relatively unchanged over time. The SC07 is a 5-inch white plastic disc that protrudes about 2 inches from the ceiling. For reference, the Kidde 30CUD10 shares the same five-inch diameter and two-inch depth, but is heavier. Combination alarms tend to be larger due
