The initial Ferrari Luce was sold for $40 million, which is 36 times higher than its estimated value.

The inaugural production Ferrari Luce fetched $40 million at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction, establishing records for the highest-priced new car, electric vehicle, and charity car sold at public auction. Ferrari will not retain any of the proceeds, and the vehicle is not expected to be delivered until early 2027.

The first production Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million. Chassis 0 was auctioned at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event over the weekend, breaking records for the priciest new car, the most expensive electric car, and the costliest charity car ever sold at public auction.

The initial estimate was $1.1 million, but it sold for approximately 36 times that amount, surpassing the previous record held by the unique Daytona SP3 by $14 million at the same auction last year, making it the sixth most expensive car ever auctioned.

Ferrari will not receive any part of the sale. The funds will go to the Ferrari Foundation to support educational initiatives.

The buyer will not receive the car either, as it has yet to be built. Chassis 0 will return to Maranello and is planned for delivery in the first quarter of 2027, constructed to US specifications, meaning buyers outside the US will incur additional homologation costs.

What the buyer is getting is an exclusive specification. The paint is a unique Madraperla Semi-Gloss developed solely for this car, shifting from green to violet depending on the light angle, along with specially designed wheels and brake calipers, Le Mans metallic leather interior, and grey secondary trim instead of black.

This situation does not resolve the debate surrounding the vehicle. The Luce's unveiling caused Ferrari's stock to drop by 7% as investors expressed concerns about its design and the underlying strategy.

Criticism also emerged from within the family. Former chairman Luca di Montezemolo suggested the car should feature a different logo.

Someone bore the cost of that backlash. Ferrari replaced its marketing chief a month after the car's reveal.

The commercial outcome had already materialized, and it was not through this auction. Despite the surrounding controversy, the Luce sold out quietly.

This is an important detail to note. A charity lot for chassis number one constitutes its own collectible category, as evidenced by the petrol Daytona SP3 selling for $26 million last year, indicating that $40 million demonstrates buyers are willing to pay significant amounts for firsts, rather than suggesting a growing acceptance of electric Ferraris.
