Serve Robotics teams up with Grubhub to become the common robotic solution for food delivery across the U.S.
Serve Robotics, the sidewalk delivery firm that originated from Uber, has brought Grubhub onto its list of partners, a strategic move that quietly positions it as a key player in America’s food-delivery robot sector.
Under a partnership with Wonder, Grubhub’s parent company, Serve’s compact bots will soon deliver takeout orders from the Grubhub marketplace, starting in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and Alexandria, Virginia. This marks Serve as the third major U.S. delivery platform to join forces; it previously operated deliveries for Uber Eats, its former parent company, and DoorDash. By partnering with all three, Serve is betting that the value lies in the robots themselves rather than in any specific app.
This represents a significantly different strategy than what most people envision when thinking about sharing the sidewalks with small delivery robots. The Grubhub integration will initially involve over 100 participating merchants in Chicago and nearly 200 in Los Angeles.
Serve claims to have more than 2,000 robots deployed across the United States, serving approximately three million people and over 4,000 restaurants. This fleet has been developed rapidly since it committed the promise of up to 2,000 bots to Uber Eats back in 2023.
For a segment that has long remained in a state of continuous pilot-testing, actually deploying thousands of operable machines marks a more challenging and less glamorous milestone.
Alongside the Grubhub partnership, Serve has also launched operations in two new markets with DoorDash, Washington, DC and San Jose, its seventh and eighth cities, expanding its reach to around eight million people across various locations, including Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami.
The company is also experimenting with “micro-depots,” which are small, low-cost bases designed to help it expand into new neighborhoods without the need for expensive full-scale facilities, precisely the type of practical logistics adjustment that will determine if the economic model is sustainable.
Serve has evolved beyond a purely sidewalk delivery concept. In 2026, it acquired Diligent Robotics, the maker of the Moxi hospital robot, and is now deploying the faster Moxi 2.0 in hospitals in Chicago and Los Angeles, betting that the same autonomous technology can efficiently transport medical supplies in a hospital as it can deliver a burrito on the street.
Additionally, it has initiated an in-robot advertising program featuring a character named “Chomp,” dressed in a hamburger suit and co-created with Grubhub, highlighting that a robot lingering on a busy sidewalk can also function as a moving advertisement.
Delivery robots have been on the verge of launching for nearly a decade, with notable trials from Domino’s using Nuro and Boston Dynamics training Spot to walk to doorsteps. The significant change has been less about technological advancements and more about the willingness of major platforms to integrate autonomy into their operations rather than treat it as a mere experimental project. Serve’s proposition to serve as the shared robotic infrastructure that these platforms utilize will only succeed if this shift is genuine and lasting.
However, the common challenges of a young, publicly traded hardware company remain. Deployment of robots does not equate to profitability; sidewalk delivery is characterized by low margins coupled with persistent hardware, maintenance, and mapping costs. Like its competitors, Serve is still investing to validate its unit economics rather than realizing profits.
The announcement focuses more on robots and their reach rather than on revenues and profit margins. While counting bots on the sidewalks is positive, it is not yet a figure seen in profit margins.
Nonetheless, the trajectory is significant. By establishing itself as the delivery robot that Uber Eats, DoorDash, and now Grubhub can all utilize, Serve aims to become essential infrastructure—a foundational layer beneath the applications, instead of a competitor to them. The pressing questions that remain are whether America’s sidewalks can accommodate thousands more small delivery robots and if anyone can transform them into a sustainable profit source, which the next few thousand robots will need to address.
