Reddit is entering the S&P 500 while its stock has dropped 31% this year.

The index provider announced the modification on August 13, in a statement issued at 6:12 PM New York time. Reddit falls under the Communication Services sector and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange as RDDT. A second change occurred two days later, on August 20, when Sun Communities substituted Webster Financial in the S&P MidCap 400. This vacancy arose because a landlord was acquired.

This adjustment is occurring outside the regular schedule, and the reasons are significant. Equity Residential is buying AvalonBay Communities, with the deal anticipated to conclude shortly. The merged company will be rebranded as Vivmark Residential and will maintain its position within the index. Thus, one S&P 500 entity absorbed another, leading to the opening for Reddit. Similarly, Webster Financial exited the MidCap 400 due to an acquisition by Banco Santander.

Reddit did not simply occupy a pre-existing vacancy; two mergers created new openings that the index provider filled.

Regarding the share movement, Reddit shares increased by around 11% during extended trading on Thursday, according to CNBC. The stock had ended at $158.12. The driving force behind this is passive investment rather than excitement. Fund managers that track the index are required to purchase shares to align with it.

As a result, ownership of Reddit will change, as every European pension fund and retail investor holding an S&P 500 index fund will now have a stake in it starting Tuesday, regardless of any individual choice. Reddit thus becomes only the second pure social media company in the index, with Meta being the other. Pinterest and Snap were listed years earlier yet have a smaller market cap. Twitter was part of the index until Elon Musk's acquisition in 2022, after which it was rebranded as X, owned by SpaceX.

Complicating the narrative is the fact that Reddit shares had declined by 31% year-to-date until Thursday's close, Bloomberg reported. This loss must be considered in the context of the announcement. In contrast, Reddit's longer-term outlook shows a price of $34 for its initial public offering in March 2024, with the stock up 430% since then, a figure calculated post this week’s increase rather than based on Thursday's close.

The company's performance is not at fault either; the second quarter of 2026 marked Reddit’s eighth consecutive quarter of revenue increase exceeding 60%, as well as GAAP profitability and gross margins above 90%. The financial desk covered this quarter and the market's response. Revenue hit $805 million, a 61% rise, profits more than doubled, and daily active users grew by 18%, yet the stock still experienced a 20% drop.

The concern among investors stemmed from a particular phrase: Reddit described search referrals as having been “choppy.” CEO Steve Huffman attributed the volatility to Google's introduction of its Gemini-powered AI Overviews, suggesting that Reddit is still seeking mutually beneficial outcomes.

To qualify for inclusion in the index, a company must have a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion as per the July guidelines, alongside standards for profitability, liquidity, and share float. Profitability is often overlooked; many larger tech firms fail to meet this criterion, but Reddit has achieved it every quarter since the third quarter of 2024.

This marks eight successive profitable quarters and eight out of the ten quarters recorded since going public. Reddit reported a net income of $530 million in 2025, which the company claims reflects an improvement of over $1 billion compared to 2024. The rise of passive investment has made inclusion in the index increasingly significant, transforming a place in the benchmark into a stable source of demand rather than just a status symbol.

The last similar additions occurred in June, when Marvell Technology and Flex joined the index, taking the places of Pool Corp and Campbell’s. Reddit went public in March 2024, raising $748 million in a highly valued IPO. Achieving benchmark status within 30 months is rapid by the standards of recent tech listings.

In its own announcement on August 13, Reddit characterized its model as a unique blend of growth with top-tier profit and cash flow margins. CFO Drew Vollero remarked, “We’re proud to join the S&P 500, recognizing the growth, momentum, and consistency we’ve established as a public company.” He discussed the opportunity in straightforward terms, emphasizing Reddit’s “special raw materials” and the substantial potential to continue developing excellent products and profitably scaling.

The announcement highlights Reddit's extensive corpus rather than its audience, noting over 26 billion posts and comments, with more than 130 million unique daily active users. It also positions itself as an expanding record of human experience across a variety of topics, appealing to those interested in training data as much as advertising buyers.

This framing is intentional; Reddit aims to present itself to investors as a valuable data asset within the AI economy, rather than just a website drawing visitors. Investors
