Phantom Blade Zero has launched an 11-minute gameplay demonstration, achieving eight million views within the first day.
On Wednesday, Phantom Blade Zero released an exciting 11-minute gameplay demo and opened pre-orders on all platforms. The video quickly amassed approximately eight million views on the Chinese video platform Bilibili within just one day, while the game climbed to number one on Steam's global best-sellers list.
Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia-inspired third-person action RPG developed and published by S-Game, based in Beijing. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game showcases a dark, atmospheric art style alongside fast-paced combat, set in a fictional world that merges Chinese martial arts with steampunk elements.
In contrast to the fragmented trailers and short gameplay clips that had been released earlier, this latest demo provides a more comprehensive glimpse of the actual game. The developers opted out of CG footage and instead presented two complete levels, giving players a clearer understanding of the gameplay experience.
The demo primarily features two stages: Fog Forest Hunt and Lone City Showdown, allowing a closer examination of both combat mechanics and exploration. Fans of the Phantom Blade series will recognize elements such as rapid-step combos and Chain Blade armor-breaking attacks, with one notable new addition being the recently unveiled Reality-Void switching system. In simple terms, this system allows players to switch between the real world and the Void during battle, with each state offering distinct moves and combat interactions. This adds another dimension to combat, requiring players to consider not only attack combinations but also positioning, timing, and the dimension in which they are fighting.
The gameplay footage emphasizes the speed and rhythm of combat, showcasing relatively fast character movement, dodges, attacks, and enemy combos. The Chain Blade also imparts a unique visual and mechanical identity to the combat. Coupled with ink-wash-inspired settings and dynamic lighting, the game maintains the dark, stylized wuxia aesthetic that has become a hallmark of the series.
The demo further reveals numerous details previously unseen, including destructible rain-soaked alleys in Jiangnan style, weather effects that intensify with combat, and various types of elite adversaries. According to the developers, the gameplay demo was recorded on a PS5 in Performance Mode, targeting 60fps, while the PC version will support higher frame rates and ultrawide displays. Pre-orders are currently open, with three editions to choose from: Standard, Deluxe, and a physical Collector’s Edition.
After 11 minutes of gameplay, Phantom Blade Zero is providing players with more than just trailers to fuel speculation. The footage offers a clearer foundation to evaluate its combat system, environments, and overall polish.
For a game developed in China that centers on intense action gameplay, the effectiveness of its combat feel, animation quality, and level pacing will ultimately be more significant than just having stunning visuals. So far, Phantom Blade Zero has successfully established its combat identity.
The game is anticipated to launch in the fourth quarter of this year on PS5, PC, and other platforms. The pressing question now is whether the final release will consistently fulfill the promises made in this demo—and whether the complete game will have sufficient content and variety to maintain that experience throughout.
