The Pixel Watch 5 may seem similar to its predecessor, but it now has the capability to monitor your blood pressure and insulin resistance.
It's that time of year again. Google has revealed its latest hardware collection, which includes the new Pixel 11 series, as well as a smartwatch that will be available throughout 2026 and into the first half of 2027, alongside the Gemini-powered smartphones.
Presenting the Google Pixel Watch 5, which features a classic round design, an improved chip, and two health monitoring functionalities that could be appealing to potential buyers: Blood Pressure Trends and Insulin Resistance Trends (or metabolic health).
So what hardware updates has Google made to the watch?
Google has maintained the circular shape, so Pixel Watch 4 users won't feel alarmed by the changes. The new model is available in 41mm and 45mm case sizes, weighing 31 grams and 36.7 grams, respectively, both crafted from 100% recycled aluminum and covered with Gorilla Glass 5.
Four standard finishes are back: Obsidian, Fog, and Olive, plus a new Satin Pyrite option for both sizes. Additionally, there's a Champagne Gold and Canyon combo exclusive to the 41mm model, while a special edition featuring Stephen Curry will only be available in the 45mm case.
Regarding the display, the Actua 360 display reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits (the same as the Pixel Watch 4). Inside, Google has included a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip which, along with the Cortex-M55 co-processor, delivers approximately 20% faster performance.
The Watch 5 comes with 64GB of internal storage (an increase from the 32GB found in the Watch 4) and operates on Wear OS 7.0 right out of the box. Although the smartwatch does not introduce any new physical sensors, it uses Google's updated health-tracking models to showcase data in innovative formats.
How does the new Insulin Resistance Trends feature function?
Emphasizing health and fitness features, the Pixel Watch 5 includes Health Guardian, a broad term that encompasses tracking for irregular heart rhythms, unusual heart rate fluctuations, and loss of pulse—features that no other smartwatch currently offers.
In my opinion, the standout feature is the monthly Blood Pressure Trends and non-invasive Insulin Resistance Trends. These metrics are estimated using pulse wave and movement data rather than traditional cuff measurements or blood tests.
Google suggests that these trend reports will enhance understanding of biological signals that can provide early warnings of cardiovascular strain and metabolic changes before they escalate into serious issues. It's important to note that these features will be available starting in September.
Furthermore, Google is heavily incorporating Gemini-powered health and fitness guidance through the Google Health Coach (available via Google Health Premium). This service acts as a 24/7 personal trainer, developing customized workout plans and translating sleep and health trends into actionable insights.
Additionally, there is a new Breathing Emergency Detection alert, which is currently limited to EU markets. This feature can initiate a call for assistance if oxygen levels drop while a person is unresponsive. Lastly, battery life extends to 30 hours for the 41mm and 40 hours for the 45mm models with the display always on, and the provided dock can recharge either model to 50% in about 15 minutes.
The Pixel Watch 5 starts at $499.99 for the 41mm version. Pre-orders for the smartwatch can be made today, with general sales commencing on August 20, 2026.
