BYD has just released a $16,000 car, intensifying an EV price war that America is unable to match.

      China continues to release $16,000 electric vehicles while the U.S. struggles to offer options below $30,000.

      China's affordable electric vehicle market is becoming exceptionally appealing in terms of value. Just one day after Volkswagen opened preorders for its $17,175 ID. Era 5S plug-in hybrid, BYD has unveiled the 2027 Seal 06 at even lower prices.

      The DM-i plug-in hybrid starts at 99,900 yuan, approximately $14,700, while the fully electric Seal 06 begins at 109,900 yuan, about $16,100. In comparison, the least expensive electric vehicle in America, the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, starts at $28,995, making the Bolt almost $13,000 pricier than the entry-level Seal 06 EV.

      The Seal 06 EV features BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery and an 800V high-voltage architecture, with battery options of 52.9kWh and 64.3kWh. Depending on the configuration, the CLTC range can reach 530km or 630km, which translates to roughly 329 and 391 miles, respectively. Its more powerful 240kW motor can accelerate the sedan from zero to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds.

      Additionally, BYD has incorporated its proprietary flash-charging platform into the Seal 06 EV, a fast-charging technology also found in pricier BYD models. The higher-end variants come with BYD's LiDAR-equipped God’s Eye B 5.0 driver-assistance system for city and highway navigation, and the top models add the DiSus-C electromagnetic damping system for continuously adjustable suspension.

      Moreover, the vehicle includes a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen, an 8.8-inch digital dashboard, an optional 29-inch head-up display, 50W wireless charging, and DeepSeek-powered voice assistance.

      The Seal 06 is just one of the many competitively priced EVs emerging from China. The 2026 BYD Seagull, for instance, starts at around $10,300 and offers approximately 250 miles of CLTC range, with available LiDAR technology. BAIC’s Arcfox Beta T1 has even lower pricing, starting at around $9,200.

      Recently, Volkswagen introduced the $17,175 ID. Era 5S, and now BYD has responded with a fully electric model priced at $16,100. Meanwhile, America has finally reintroduced a sub-$30,000 Bolt, but when comparing what one could purchase for the same amount in China, this achievement seems less impressive.

      Kia has finally revealed the pricing for the EV3, which may come as a surprise. The entry-level version is priced at $31,385 in the U.S., including a $1,495 destination fee, making it the most affordable EV Kia offers here and one of the more budget-friendly electric vehicle options currently available.

      The display issue can prevent drivers from seeing essential safety warnings and indicators. According to documents from the NHTSA, Toyota is recalling 508,354 Camry Hybrids in the U.S. after identifying that the digital instrument cluster may go blank, obscuring critical information. This problem affects select models from 2025 and 2026, although the fix is relatively straightforward: Toyota indicates that a software update should resolve the issue.
