The upcoming Xbox could potentially support backward compatibility with all previous Xbox generations, contingent upon the agreement of publishers.
A leaked memo reveals that Microsoft's upcoming console, codenamed Project Helix, may have the capability to play games from all previous Xbox generations. If accurate, this would result in the most extensive game library available on any console, particularly as it is also rumored to support PC games.
Backward compatibility across four console generations
Tom Warren from The Verge has acquired a document that Microsoft is purportedly sharing with publishers, outlining Helix's plan to run games from each past Xbox generation. The memo indicates that Helix could support titles from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles, in addition to new Helix games and PC games.
However, playing older Xbox games on Helix might not be as simple as inserting a disc, as reports suggest that Microsoft has not yet decided on including a disc drive in the console.
The memo serves as a proposal. Microsoft is encouraging publishers to agree to backward compatibility for their legacy titles, a step that wouldn't be necessary if the aim was merely to allow players to enjoy the games they already own physically. This implies that digital sales are a significant focus, with one section labeled “Why publishers win” clearly stating that publishers would benefit from reselling older titles.
Xbox One and Series discs can utilize the Disc-to-Digital feature
Not all aspects of this plan may require publishers' consent. Xbox One and Xbox Series titles are projected to convert to portable digital licenses through Microsoft's anticipated Disc-to-Digital program, which the memo claims necessitates no publisher action per title and would be applicable to any Xbox device, including Helix. Another leaked roadmap hints at an August launch for that program.
The issue of obtaining permission primarily affects original Xbox and Xbox 360 games. Enabling those titles to run on Helix entails true technical backward compatibility rather than just a license exchange, meaning each publisher must authorize each individual title, determine pricing, and decide whether it will be included in Xbox Game Pass or be a standalone purchase. A gradual introduction of Xbox 360 titles is anticipated to start only in 2027, reflecting the slow pace of these approvals.
If Helix intends to support four generations of Xbox history, its success is more reliant on the number of publishers Microsoft can persuade to agree, one game at a time.

The future of physical game discs appears bleak, with an entirely digital library becoming more and more likely. Nevertheless, Microsoft may provide Xbox owners with a means to take their collections of physical games along as they transition.
A leaked Microsoft roadmap distributed to game publishers details the upcoming launch of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program alongside an extensive initiative for backward compatibility. The document reportedly aims for an August rollout for general access, an October full launch for original Xbox games on PC, and a gradual introduction of Xbox 360 titles starting in 2027.
