Deel purchases deepfake-detection startup Clarity as the issue of fake hires increases.
Deel has acquired Clarity, a deepfake-detection startup based in Tel Aviv, for up to $50 million, marking its 15th acquisition and its first in Israel. Clarity specializes in real-time identity verification and deepfake detection. The acquisition, involving cash and shares, coincides with Deel announcing that its annual recurring revenue exceeded $1.5 billion in the first half of 2026. Founded in 2019 in San Francisco by Alex Bouaziz and Shuo Wang, Deel is valued at over $17 billion and serves more than 40,000 organizations across 150 countries.
This acquisition addresses a growing concern in cybersecurity that has gained boardroom attention. Gartner estimates that by 2028, one in four candidate profiles globally will be fraudulent, a situation exacerbated by affordable AI tools capable of creating realistic fakes. Currently, most companies verify a candidate's identity only once during recruitment, after which they move to a separate IT system for access and credentials—a process Deel identifies as vulnerable. With Clarity’s technology integrated, identity checks will now be performed continuously throughout sourcing, onboarding, device provisioning, and ongoing access management.
Bouaziz emphasized the need for "continuous trust" rather than one-time verification. Deel had already been using Clarity's product internally before opting for the purchase. Clarity was established in late 2022 by Michael Matias, a Stanford computer science alumnus and former officer in Israel’s Unit 8200 intelligence corps, with partners Natalie Fridman and Gil Avriel. The startup gained early recognition for authenticating footage during the Israel-Hamas conflict, collaborating with the Israeli government and media outlets before venturing into enterprise identity verification. In 2024, Clarity secured $16 million in seed funding led by Walden Catalyst Ventures and Bessemer Venture Partners.
Clarity's engineering team has now joined Deel, creating the company's first dedicated cybersecurity division. Deel’s broader strategy focuses on consolidation by integrating payroll, immigration, compliance, IT management, and identity security into a single platform, allowing for a cohesive approach to hiring verification and access management.
This move strengthens Deel's competitive position against rivals like Rippling, which raised $450 million earlier this year and is embroiled in a legal dispute with Deel over trade secrets since 2025. Other competitors, such as Remote, Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, and Personio, are also incorporating AI into enterprise HR, mainly to automate routine tasks rather than enhancing the security measures that Deel is prioritizing.
