Apple will finally make the iPhone-to-Windows copy-paste process much easier.

Your iPhone might soon enable copying and pasting with a Windows PC as it ideally should.

Copying content on an iPhone and pasting it onto a Windows PC should be a mundane task. While this process is seamless between an iPhone and a Mac, Windows users have been left in the lurch.

Recently, Microsoft has officially requested Apple to provide interoperable clipboard functionality via the European Union's interoperability framework. The request, made on March 25, points out that iOS limitations hinder third-party platforms from creating a user experience similar to Apple’s Universal Clipboard. Apple is now in Phase III and has committed to working on a solution.

Microsoft aims for Windows to utilize Universal Clipboard.

Apple’s Universal Clipboard allows users to copy text, images, photos, and videos on one Apple device and paste them directly to another. Currently, third-party iOS applications cannot offer the same seamless syncing. According to Microsoft, for an app to work, it must be actively open and obtain explicit clipboard permissions from the user, limiting background transfers between an iPhone and a PC.

The goal is for Windows users to be able to copy text and other compatible content on either device and paste it onto the other without needing to reopen an app or approve each transfer. The Phone Link already connects iPhones to Windows for calls, messages, notifications, contacts, and file transfers, but seamless clipboard sharing is still restricted to supported Android phones.

Apple's response is expected to arrive in 2027.

Apple plans to launch an extension that will receive a system notification when an item is copied to the iPhone clipboard. This extension would then send that item to a connected device using Apple’s Accessory Transport framework. Users would need to give permission once for each paired device via AccessorySetupKit.

Apple describes this project as a “significant engineering effort” and anticipates completing development by fall 2027. A beta version aimed at developers will follow at some point after, leading to a full release later. The request specifies the European Union as the target market, and Apple has yet to commit to introducing this capability globally.

This lengthy timeline is disappointing for such a straightforward function. Nonetheless, Apple making its efficient ecosystem benefit available to Windows users could eliminate a surprisingly frustrating hurdle for anyone who uses an iPhone alongside a PC.
