      Microsoft has devoted the last few years to enthusiastically illustrating how AI will revolutionize Windows. However, Satya Nadella’s latest assurance for the operating system is one that most users can support. The company is finally prioritizing improved functionality.

      During Microsoft’s fourth-quarter earnings call for fiscal 2026, Nadella stated that the company is investing to ensure Windows achieves the "best quality and fundamentals," while also promoting the platform as a secure environment for on-device AI. Although the details remain sparse and Microsoft has yet to release a significant Windows 11 quality update, it does highlight a broader overhaul that has been in progress throughout 2026.

      Windows 11 still has many foundational issues to resolve

      Microsoft has begun to address several user complaints that have emerged since the launch of Windows 11. The company is currently testing the reintroduction of a movable taskbar, allowing it to be positioned along the top or sides of the screen again. Additionally, it has been working to reduce baseline RAM usage, fix memory leaks, and improve slow startup times. Efforts are also being made to enhance File Explorer speed and streamline the overall Windows Search experience.

      The recent Low Latency Profile update was another significant advancement, focusing on improving the sluggishness of the Start menu and shell response rather than introducing new features. Microsoft has also started to reduce some of the Copilot clutter it had previously added, with Copilot branding being removed from sections of Notepad and Snipping Tool as part of a broader cleanup of Windows.

      Microsoft still needs to rebuild user trust

      This renewed focus on quality comes after a year filled with problematic Windows updates. The mandatory Windows 11 update in June led to reports of boot failures, BitLocker recovery prompts, OneDrive issues, and crashes on certain PCs. Subsequently, Microsoft released an emergency update in July for affected Dell systems dealing with unexpected issues like overheating, performance degradation, and significant battery drain.

      Financial reports reveal the motivation behind Microsoft’s push to refine Windows. The company’s More Personal Computing revenue dropped 4% during the quarter, with a 7% decline in Windows OEM and Devices revenue. However, for a change, the Windows 11 roadmap appears appealing, even if it is relatively straightforward.
