The competition in the AI browser market is evolving. After dedicating much of 2025 to reinventing web search with integrated chatbots, startups are increasingly focusing on browser agents capable of automating repetitive tasks rather than merely responding to inquiries. The latest company to make this shift is Polar, a startup launched by former Perplexity engineer Kevin Zhang, which has secured $5.7 million in seed funding with backing from Madrona.
Unlike the first generation of AI browsers that were aimed at everyday users, Polar targets knowledge workers specifically. Its concept is simple: rather than competing with Google Search, the browser seeks to minimize the repetitive tasks that professionals conduct across numerous browser tabs daily.
The forthcoming AI browser is not attempting to replace Chrome.
As reported by TechCrunch, Zhang believes the initial wave of AI browsers was overly focused on substituting default search engines or assisting users with infrequent tasks like booking flights and making restaurant reservations. While these features garnered attention, they lacked the compelling nature needed to alter long-term browsing behaviors.
“When considering end-user consumers, booking a flight or making a reservation isn’t something they do on a daily or weekly basis,” Zhang explained to TechCrunch. “There wasn’t a strong incentive for the mass consumer population to transition to an AI browser and perceive its value. This is why our AI browser is not aimed at the mass consumer market; we concentrate on areas where we believe browser agents truly provide value, namely knowledge work.”
Polar embodies this approach. Users can delegate tasks to AI agents based on their open tabs, save frequently used prompts, set up recurring workflows, and automate efforts in sales, recruitment, marketing, research, and business operations. The browser is tailored for non-technical users, eliminating the need for scripting or custom automation development.
The product operates on a freemium model. Users are allocated a limited number of AI credits daily, with a subscription starting at $20 per month required for increased usage. Zhang also mentioned to TechCrunch that many users continue to use a different browser for routine tasks and only switch to Polar when automation is necessary.

Polar’s launch underscores the rapid transformation of the AI browser landscape. In 2025, almost every major AI company sought to create a browser with an integrated chatbot, aiming to take control of the interface for web access. However, that strategy has shifted.
OpenAI’s Atlas has been discontinued, The Browser Company’s Dia is now focusing more on productivity, and browser startups such as Strawberry, Browser Use, and Aside are concentrating on AI agent-centric products rather than conversational search. Even Perplexity’s Comet, where Zhang previously worked, has pivoted toward browser agents, as noted by TechCrunch.
Madrona sees this transition as opening up a much larger opportunity. Partner Sabrina Albert explained to TechCrunch that knowledge work represents a significant automation market since browsers are central to users' digital workflows. Given that users are already logged into the services they use regularly, browsers offer a natural setting for AI agents to engage with those applications.
Polar still must demonstrate that professionals are willing to adopt a secondary browser focused on automation. However, if the upcoming phase of AI browsing is characterized less by enhanced search capabilities and more by software that efficiently handles tasks in the background, Polar is betting it has timed its entry perfectly.
