ByteDance leads China's AI earnings with $4 billion, integrating Lark into Doubao.
ByteDance is quietly emerging as a frontrunner in China, a race that many observers are focused on from America. The company behind TikTok is generating approximately $4 billion annually from artificial intelligence, the highest figure publicly claimed by any Chinese firm, according to the South China Morning Post.
To maintain its advantage, ByteDance is revamping part of its organizational structure. It is integrating Lark, its workplace application known as Feishu in China, with the teams creating its Doubao chatbot and its cloud services. This strategy was outlined in an internal memo accessed by the publication.
The integration of the workplace app is significant. Lark’s product team will combine with the group managing Doubao, ByteDance’s competitor to ChatGPT, now led by Zhao Qi, who previously oversaw Doubao alone. Meanwhile, Lark’s sales and support teams will transition to Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud division, to market AI models and software to enterprises. Engineers from Lark will move to Flow, a division that specializes in AI applications.
In straightforward terms, ByteDance is dismantling a standalone product and reallocating its components towards AI. The company stated that the objective is to enhance "AI product competitiveness and customer service capabilities." The message to employees is unmistakable: the future lies with the chatbot and the cloud, rather than the office suite.
Although the $4 billion revenue positions ByteDance ahead of more prominent Chinese AI companies, such as DeepSeek, Moonshot, or Alibaba, it remains insignificant compared to American leaders. Both OpenAI and Anthropic command revenues that are many times higher. This figure highlights the disparity with U.S. AI rather than any leading position for Chinese firms.
Chinese labs continuously revolve around funding. Most offer their best models for free to attract users and are just beginning to develop ways to monetize them. A company already generating $4 billion possesses a significant advantage.
The reorganization is part of a broader initiative. ByteDance is investing in every aspect of AI simultaneously, from advanced models and its Seedance video generator to infrastructure and chips. The Financial Times has extensively covered this endeavor, with some viewing it as a substantial risk.
The investment in video production is already apparent. ByteDance’s Seedance model is driving a surge of AI-generated short dramas in China, reducing production timelines from months to weeks. The research firm DataEye anticipates that China’s AI short-drama market will hit 40 billion yuan ($5.9 billion) this year, with viewership exceeding 600 million.
In the context of its various AI projects, this indicates a company striving to establish its presence across the entire AI landscape simultaneously. The changes involving Lark are merely where this ambition intersected with the organizational chart.
