Samsung’s new foldables can function as a USB webcam for your laptop. The Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra, and Flip 8 all include this USB webcam feature, which initially appeared on Pixel phones in 2023 before being introduced to the Galaxy S26 series earlier this year.
How webcam mode operates
Android Authority has verified that the USB webcam feature is available on all three models in the new Galaxy Z series, marking the first Samsung foldables to include this option. Similar to the Galaxy S26 series, the USB webcam option can be found in the USB settings menu by tapping the notification that appears when the phone is connected to a PC.
Selecting the Webcam option from the “Use USB for” menu directs the camera feed of the phone to the video calling application running on the connected computer. No additional applications or drivers are required on either end.
The hinge gives foldables an advantage
To use webcam mode on a Galaxy S26, users need to prop the device on a holder or lean it against something to ensure the camera is properly angled. Samsung’s new foldables simplify this, as they can be folded halfway, allowing the hinge to hold the phone upright and angled toward the user without the need for a stand or case.
This built-in stand capability eliminates a step that Galaxy S26 owners must navigate, whether by purchasing a separate phone mount or improvising with household items. It may be a minor difference, but it significantly enhances the practicality of the feature on a foldable compared to a traditional flat phone.
Aside from the convenience, webcam mode provides users with a noticeable improvement in quality compared to integrated webcams. The primary camera on all three models significantly outperforms most laptop webcams currently available, so users will see a substantial enhancement in video call quality as soon as they switch.
