Charging $20 a month for API access is reasonable for a business or individual, but makes little sense for an AI agent that only requires a single request costing a minuscule amount. Although billing by the request seems like a straightforward solution, current payment systems were never designed for such small, frequent, or automated transactions. This issue is gaining serious attention outside the cryptocurrency sector.
Recently, the Linux Foundation announced the formation of the x402 Foundation, supported by over 40 organizations, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Google, AWS, Stripe, Coinbase, Circle, and Cloudflare. Its aim is to establish a common standard for internet-native payments that software can initiate automatically, utilizing the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code for machine-to-machine commerce.
The participants listed are notable for uniting companies that rarely collaborate on emerging technologies. Payment networks, cloud providers, blockchain companies, and internet infrastructure firms are all acknowledging the same challenge. If AI agents are to become significant players in the digital economy, they require a mechanism for value exchange that is as seamless as information exchange.

According to the announcement, the upgrade enhances compatibility with Casper 2.0 and CEP-3009, the protocol for authorized transfers. This adaptation enables payment approvals to be executed off-chain and settled on-chain within a standard HTTP request. The network has also lowered minimum transaction costs to make low-value machine payments economically viable and integrated its ProofLayer infrastructure to verify collateral and redemption activities.
While another stablecoin introduction might typically struggle for distinction in a saturated market, this announcement signifies a broader industry trend when viewed through the lens of AI. Stablecoins are increasingly being considered not just as trading tools or payment options for individuals, but as essential operating infrastructure for software. If AI agents become regular users of online services, they will require access to stable digital assets that can transfer autonomously, settle rapidly, and integrate seamlessly into internet protocols.
It remains uncertain whether blockchain will ultimately be the dominant framework for these transactions.
