      Samsung has provided foldable enthusiasts with a larger 4:3 display through the Galaxy Z Fold 8, but the company is not stopping there. Reports indicate that Samsung has begun early development on a successor to the Galaxy Z TriFold, its dual-hinged phone that transforms into something much more akin to a proper tablet.

      As per Korean source ETNews, Samsung has already shared details about this next-generation project with suppliers, although the final specifications have yet to be confirmed. One noteworthy detail that will certainly appeal to users focused on the display is that a source close to the project informed ETNews that Samsung is currently aiming for a screen size comparable to that of the original TriFold.

      Another nearly 10-inch OLED may be on the way

      The original Galaxy Z TriFold featured a 9.96-inch OLED display on the inside, accompanied by a 6.49-inch cover screen. Like the newly launched Z Fold 8, this sizable inner panel also has a 4:3 aspect ratio, providing a significantly more functional space for videos, gaming, and reading compared to traditional book-style foldables. In our experience, the original model was especially impressive when unfolded, despite the additional size and weight due to three display sections and two hinges.

      Samsung has shown renewed interest in display ratios this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has adopted a shorter and wider design with its own 4:3 inner display that offers a more practical aspect ratio. A second TriFold could push this idea even further by offering considerably more OLED screen real estate.

      The TriFold might evolve into a standard Galaxy Z device

      The initial TriFold was intentionally limited in production, with only about 30,000 units made, and Samsung treated it primarily as a demonstration of its technology rather than a mass-market product. However, this could change with the second iteration. An industry insider mentioned that Samsung might ramp up production after gauging the market response to the original device. Early development has commenced in such a way that the new model could reportedly be unveiled around July 2027, coinciding with the Galaxy Z9 lineup.

      If this comes to fruition, Samsung’s foldable range could expand to four devices: the Galaxy Z Flip, the broader Fold, the Fold Ultra, and the TriFold. Samsung has considerable work ahead if it intends for the second generation to transcend being just another technological showcase. Nevertheless, the prospect of a pocketable device that unfolds into roughly 10 inches of OLED is an exciting hardware innovation that I hope Samsung continues to explore.
