LG has consented to eliminate the McAfee pop-up notifications on Windows computers following intervention from Microsoft.
It's a temporary solution, not a permanent one, as the channel allowing LG to install the pop-up is still fully operational.
When an LG monitor is connected, Windows may quietly install more than just a driver. This was the experience of several users this month when a pop-up promoting a McAfee antivirus trial appeared on their screens without any consent prompt. Microsoft has intervened, and LG has stated it will disable the advertisement.
Source of the pop-up
Windows permits hardware manufacturers to auto-install companion software as soon as a device is connected, which does not require user consent. LG takes advantage of this process to install its Monitor App Installer when an LG monitor is connected. LG's recent update log for the Monitor App Installer lists McAfee as an "Additional App," which is what led to the antivirus ad surfacing for users this month.
Thanks, Tim. The team is looking into it.— Pavan Davuluri (@pavandavuluri) July 19, 2026
After user complaints, Microsoft became aware of the issue when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney tagged Windows chief Pavan Davuluri in an X post highlighting the matter (as reported by Windows Latest). Davuluri confirmed a resolution three days later, stating that LG had agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up as a short-term solution.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We’ve contacted the LG team, and as an immediate step, they have agreed to turn off the McAfee pop-up from their app. We appreciate LG collaborating with us to improve the experience for our mutual customers.…— Pavan Davuluri (@pavandavuluri) July 22, 2026
A larger issue remains unaddressed by Microsoft
In a statement to Windows Latest, LG defended its practices, asserting that McAfee does not install without explicit user consent and pointed to Microsoft's own windows distribution process as the root of the issue. However, this explanation contradicts what several users reported, as many claimed the pop-up appeared autonomously, without a consent prompt for installation.
While this specific issue has been addressed, the automatic installation pipeline that allowed the McAfee pop-up is still active for all other manufacturers. Microsoft acted quickly once the complaint reached the appropriate individual, but that presents its own problem. A fix that only materializes after a viral post and a CEO's involvement isn’t a true resolution; it’s merely damage control. The next unsolicited installation from another OEM won’t receive similar attention unless it garners the same level of scrutiny.

Mozilla has launched Firefox 153, providing users with a built-in mechanism to separate work, personal, shopping, and banking activities. The update began rolling out to Release channel users on July 21 and also introduces HDR video playback on Windows, enhancements for PDFs, and improved controls over local files and network devices.
Containers enable tabs to open in isolated environments where cookies, logins, and site storage are not shared. This allows a user to stay signed into two accounts on the same website, keep a work Google account separate from personal YouTube activity, or prevent shopping cookies from tracking routine browsing.
