Amazon closes its AGI Lab amid new AI-related layoffs.
Amazon is stepping back from the competition to develop the most advanced AI. This week, it shut down its AGI Lab in San Francisco, a team dedicated to artificial general intelligence, as reported by The Information. This decision was part of broader layoffs in Amazon’s AGI division, which was first reported by Reuters.
The lab was established only 18 months ago, in December 2024, with a team of several dozen employees. Its mission was to enhance the usefulness of AI agents for businesses. Now, it has been disbanded and the staff responsible for its creation are being let go. The full extent of the layoffs has yet to be determined.
Amazon presents this as a shift in focus rather than a retreat. A spokesperson stated, “We’ve been developing large AI models for several years, and it continues to be one of our top priorities.” The company is “refining our focus on the initiatives that are most significant for customers,” which has led to “the elimination of some roles within parts of our AGI organization.”
Leadership departures occurred prior to the layoffs. Rohit Prasad, the executive in charge of Amazon's AGI efforts, departed at the end of last year, followed by David Luan, who managed the AGI Lab, in February. Following this, Amazon integrated its AGI initiatives under Peter DeSantis, alongside its chip and quantum divisions.
This pattern is not unprecedented. This marks the latest in a series of job cuts since Amazon laid off 16,000 employees in January. Many tech companies are reducing their workforce and citing AI as a reason. The swift loss of two leaders and an entire lab speaks volumes.
Amazon has invested heavily in AI, but primarily not at the cutting edge. Its AI models have had minimal impact, and its principal strategy revolves around AWS and substantial investments in infrastructure. While competitors focus on developing the smartest models, Amazon concentrates on providing the necessary tools and resources, as well as AI agents integrating into businesses. Its significant investment lies externally, with billions allocated to Anthropic.
Additionally, a growing doubt exists regarding the efficacy of today’s large language models in achieving general intelligence. Whether Amazon agrees with this notion or is merely pursuing profitability, the message remains clear: the company that aims to empower others’ AI initiatives has ceased efforts to create the most intelligent system itself. Its AI objectives now lean toward selling AI rather than inventing it.
