Apple may restrict app access on financed iPhones if payments are not made on time.

Code found in the iOS 27 beta indicates the existence of a system that might prohibit most apps until an overdue payment is settled.

Apple is reportedly set to introduce a Klarna-supported financing program next week, allowing users to pay for an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch in monthly installments over a period of two to three years. Although Apple has not revealed any specifics about the rumored "Apple Upgrade" program, code discovered in an iOS 27 beta version implies that the company has developed a mechanism to manage situations where customers fall behind on payments.

A feature that lenders can activate to restrict app access

As reported by 9to5Mac, iOS 27 introduces a framework named App Managed Features, which permits an authorized lending app to track whether a customer is making timely payments. If enough payments are missed, the lender can enable Restricted Mode on the device, which limits access to all apps except for nine designated ones.

According to reports, essential apps such as Phone, Settings, Wallet, Clock, Health, Passwords, Magnifier, Accessibility Reader, and the App Store will remain functional. Subscriptions linked to any blocked apps will continue, as Restricted Mode seems to have no effect on App Store billing. Therefore, users locked out of an app will still incur charges for any active subscriptions.

A secondary feature called Partner Finance Lock aims to eliminate obvious workarounds, preventing users from circumventing Restricted Mode through factory resets, selling a restricted device, or dismantling it for parts.

The lender determines the guidelines, not Apple

Critical apps like Messages and Home that provide important alerts may remain accessible during a lockout. This decision reportedly lies with the lender, meaning that the exceptions available to a user could vary based on the financing source.

The code does not specify a minimum number of missed payments that would lead to a lockout, indicating that financing partners will set those terms. Thus, the specifics regarding payment leniency will likely be found only in the customer agreement.

None of this information is confirmed and Apple may implement additional changes before launching the system with iOS 27 later this year. Furthermore, it remains uncertain whether this system will also be applied to financed iPads, Macs, or Apple Watches.
