Apple is revamping all its Macs, starting with the introduction of a touchscreen.

For years, Apple maintained that the Mac would not feature a touchscreen. However, this is about to change. The company is set to revamp its entire Mac lineup, with the most notable new model being a MacBook that can be operated with a finger.

This update will take place over the fall and into next year, affecting approximately 11 devices, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. It will begin modestly with a refreshed 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the new M6 chip and the first new iMacs in two years, both expected this fall. An Apple representative did not provide any comments.

The main highlight is yet to come. A redesigned premium MacBook in 14-inch and 16-inch variants will feature a touchscreen and an OLED display, marking the first such innovations for the Mac, according to MacRumors. This model is slated for release between late this year and early next year. Apple is also adjusting macOS so that on-screen controls enlarge when tapped.

The specifications are not the main focus here; the real story is why this traditionally conservative company is revamping its most stable product line at all. The reason lies in AI.

A New Direction for the Mac mini

Mac sales have increased for the third consecutive year, with an unusual new audience contributing to this growth. Users running intensive AI applications have gravitated towards the Mac mini and Mac Studio, valuing their power and ability to connect with other systems. Demand has outpaced supply to such an extent that some new orders will take three months to ship.

This demand is altering Apple’s future plans. New Mac mini and Mac Studio models are currently being tested with upgraded chips, but their release depends on the availability of memory chips. This shortage has strained manufacturing capabilities and inflated prices. In February, Apple began producing the Mac mini in Houston for the first time instead of Asia.

      Other Developments in the Line

The remainder of the lineup is also being updated. A new MacBook Air is expected early next year, with an OLED variant projected for as early as 2028. Following that, a base MacBook Pro equipped with a standard M7 chip will be released, along with a refreshed MacBook Neo, Apple’s budget laptop priced at $699. Further down the line, an OLED iMac is anticipated, aligning with the new screen technology being introduced across the range.

Pricing also reflects the changes. In June, Apple increased prices for all Macs, and a fully loaded 16-inch MacBook Pro now costs $9,999. A device-leasing plan that includes Macs will begin on July 28.

Although Apple built its fortune on phones, the Mac is now experiencing a moment in AI, and the touchscreen it previously stated it would never produce stands as proof.
