Dunesday is officially here! Marvel has finally released the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel has officially released the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, confirming that the film is still set to premiere on December 18, 2026, as initially scheduled. However, this date directly coincides with the release of Dune 3, leading to the anticipated rivalry dubbed "Dunesday." Despite speculation over possible delays from one of the studios, both seem resolute in keeping their release dates intact.
**Avengers: Doomsday trailer analysis**
The trailer begins at Xavier’s School, featuring Doctor Doom narrating in his Latverian accent. He ominously states, “Something’s coming, something we may not be able to deter.” We then see Professor X, who appears to be blinded by what looks like an incursion, depicting the clash of two universes.
Following this, the scene changes to Avengers Tower, where Thor gives a serious address about the impending threat, acknowledging that the team will require a miracle for survival. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not as Iron Man but as Doctor Doom, reportedly earning around $100 million for this film and the subsequent Secret Wars.
The cast is impressively extensive, featuring heroes from three distinct universes: the Avengers and Wakandans from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, and the original X-Men.
**Which additional heroes appear in Avengers: Doomsday?**
Marvel
With such a packed lineup, identifying every hero presents a challenge. Fan-favorites making a return include Thor, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Bucky Barnes, Ant-Man, Falcon, and Loki, alongside Shuri as the new Black Panther, M’Baku, and Namor.
The Thunderbolts team also makes an appearance, featuring Yelena Belova, Bob, Red Guardian, and Ghost, in addition to the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Ben Grimm, and Johnny Storm. The X-Men return with Professor X, Beast, Magneto, Mystique, Nightcrawler, and Cyclops, along with Gambit and Shang-Chi joining the fray.
Marvel
We catch glimpses of Namor and Shuri clashing in his throne room, Cyclops preparing for battle, and a confrontation between Gambit and Shang-Chi. A standout moment occurs when Thor tries to strike Doom with Stormbreaker, which Doom effortlessly halts with two fingers. Just when the situation seems dire, Steve Rogers, portrayed again by Chris Evans, reappears and demonstrates his worthiness by lifting Mjolnir.

However, the trailer leaves many questions unanswered, such as whether Doctor Doom is the true antagonist or part of a more complex situation, and the details of Steve Rogers' return.
**Comparing Dunesday to Barbenheimer**
Warner Bros./Universal
While many refer to this as the next Barbenheimer, it's important to note that Dunesday targets a different audience. Barbie and Oppenheimer attracted entirely different viewers, whereas Doomsday and Dune are competing for the same demographic, making their ensemble casts quite similar. This overlap led to speculation that one studio would eventually decide to shift its date.
Warner Bros. Pictures
Neither studio opted to budge, and the first skirmish has already occurred. Dune 3 secured exclusive IMAX screens across the US for three consecutive weeks, leaving Avengers: Doomsday to depend on Disney’s own Infinity Vision format. Thus, the initial round goes to Dune. However, this loss appears insignificant. In fact, it heightens the stakes. Ultimately, audiences will benefit from having two major blockbusters to choose from on the same day.
