Samsung's hidden AI chip may finally alleviate the overheating issues in Exynos smartphones.

Samsung's GAIA AI chip is debuting in laptops, but its connection to Exynos suggests a potential solution for mobile devices in the future.

If you’ve ever had an Exynos-powered Galaxy phone, you're likely familiar with the issue: demanding tasks such as snapping numerous photos in quick succession, intense gaming, or video rendering can heat up your device significantly.

In these scenarios, the battery drains faster than normal as well. Fortunately, it seems Samsung might be addressing this problem in an unexpected way.

      So, what is GAIA exactly?

Samsung is sending early samples of its custom AI chip known as GAIA to laptop manufacturers such as HP and Lenovo. This chip is designed on a 4nm process to perform on-device AI tasks without relying on cloud services (according to Android Headlines).

The significant aspect for smartphones is that well-known leaker Ice Universe has noted that GAIA originates from the same System LSI division that creates Exynos mobile chips for Galaxy devices. This is not something to overlook.

The chip adopts a memory-centric architecture, positioning computing power close to custom DRAM. This allows it to handle chatbot queries and photo editing locally rather than depending on a cloud AI service.

In my view, GAIA’s design resembles Apple's unified memory concept: it minimizes the distance between computation and memory to enhance efficiency. However, unlike unified memory, GAIA appears to focus specifically on AI optimization for now.

Could this actually be included in your upcoming Galaxy phone?

Nothing is official yet, and GAIA is currently targeted at laptops for 2027. Yet, this architecture could serve as a clear pathway for Samsung to downscale it to future Exynos chips. This may genuinely address the thermal and AI performance disparity between Snapdragon and Exynos-powered Galaxy S devices, a difference I experienced with the Indian Galaxy S26 I reviewed earlier this year.

It's important to mention that this would not resolve all issues. Samsung’s modem problems remain a distinct challenge that GAIA won’t address. Nevertheless, if this hardware design is eventually incorporated into an Exynos chip, it could represent Samsung's most viable solution thus far.

Samsung's approach of testing advanced chips in laptops prior to mobile devices isn’t entirely new. By validating GAIA’s memory-focused design on a larger scale in PCs, the company reduces the risk of introducing this architecture into a smartphone chip that users rely on daily.
