Microsoft will cease syncing OneDrive on older versions of Windows 10 starting next month.
Microsoft will cease OneDrive sync support for versions of Windows 10 prior to 22H2 on August 15. After this date, users operating on older versions will not receive any more updates to the sync application, nor will there be any bug fixes or security patches. While the service will not stop functioning right away, Microsoft has indicated that “future functionality is not guaranteed.”
Windows 10 22H2, being the last version of Windows 10, will receive OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028. Microsoft stated that this change “aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems." This will also have an impact on Microsoft 365 file synchronization services for older versions.
Users on versions prior to 22H2 will need to upgrade to Windows 10 22H2, transition to Windows 11, or utilize OneDrive’s web interface, which is less convenient than desktop sync. Microsoft has been tightening its Windows ecosystem up to 2026, offering AI features as optional for some users while discontinuing support for others. Alternatives like Nextcloud continue to support Windows 10 back to version 1809 and are compatible with Linux. Satya Nadella's restructuring of Microsoft is aimed at prioritizing AI-centric products, and ending support for older configurations is part of consolidating resources in that direction.
