Apple is currently engaged in preliminary settlement discussions with the DOJ regarding its iPhone antitrust case.
Apple and the DOJ are in the preliminary stages of settlement discussions regarding the 2024 antitrust case involving the iPhone. Apple has proposed several offers this year to resolve the matter. While talks are ongoing, there is no assurance of reaching an agreement, nor is there a scheduled trial date.
The DOJ filed a lawsuit against Apple during the Biden administration, along with 19 states and the District of Columbia. The allegations included claims that Apple hindered super apps, discouraged third-party messaging solutions and cloud streaming applications, restricted competing digital wallets, and obstructed competition with smartwatches. In June 2025, Apple’s attempt to dismiss the case was unsuccessful. The company is also contending with the Supreme Court's refusal to halt its contempt order in the Epic case, making a resolution with the DOJ more appealing to mitigate its legal risks.
Apple has already taken steps to address several of the initial complaints by initiating a mini apps program, allowing Messages to support the RCS standard backed by Google, permitting cloud-streaming apps, and granting access to the iPhone’s NFC payment chip for third-party applications. While the Apple Watch remains incompatible with Android, Apple has enhanced its compatibility with non-Apple watches for the iPhone.
The Trump administration’s DOJ is seeking to resolve antitrust cases inherited from the Biden era. Stanley Woodward, the third-highest official in the DOJ overseeing antitrust matters, believes that settlements can save taxpayer money and provide swifter relief for consumers compared to prolonged litigation. It remains unclear if the 19 state attorneys general are involved in the settlement negotiations. Regulators worldwide are urging Apple to make its platforms more open, and a DOJ settlement might establish a precedent for how much Apple concedes before facing trials in other cases.
