As Sony ends support for PS3 games, RPCS3 has successfully archived thousands for PC.
The open-source emulator now recognizes 2,681 PS3 titles as fully playable before Sony ceases the sale of games on the console.
Sony is set to close the PlayStation Store on PS3, effectively halting new purchases worldwide by July 2027. Just under two weeks after this announcement, the team behind RPCS3 celebrated a noteworthy achievement.
The PS3 emulator, which is open-source, now indicates that 75% of the console's library is playable on PC. This amounts to 2,681 out of 3,559 games, and this rating signifies that they can be completed satisfactorily without encountering any game-breaking bugs.
RPCS3 did not flag this milestone specifically as a direct reaction to Sony's plans. However, the timing presents a jarring contrast: as official access to older PlayStation games diminishes, a preservation initiative is successfully enabling more of these games to function on contemporary hardware.
RPCS3 tweeted, “75% of all PlayStation 3 games are now PLAYABLE on PC! RPCS3 continues to be enhanced with new features, fixes, and optimizations, drawing it closer to fully preserving the PS3 library.”
What does "playable" exactly mean?
RPCS3 goes beyond simply getting to a title screen to claim its highest compatibility rating. A game must perform sufficiently well to be completed without significant bugs hindering progress. Minor visual or performance issues may still exist, meaning no one is claiming a perfect remaster.
Additionally, 816 games can reach gameplay but still face problems severe enough to prevent them from achieving the same rating. Only 62 titles are restricted to menus or basic loading screens.
This distinction lends more significance to the 75% figure. RPCS3 has not inflated its numbers by including countless games that only run for a few minutes before crashing.
What will Sony leave behind?
Sony's withdrawal extends beyond the declining PS3 storefront; it will also cease the production of physical discs for all new PlayStation releases starting January 2028, resulting in future games being available solely in digital formats.
The store closures will begin earlier in select regions, starting in August 2026. Previously purchased content will remain downloadable after the overall closure in July 2027, though Sony has not guaranteed that this access will be permanent.
Sony previously attempted to shut down the PS3 store in 2021 but reversed its decision after player backlash. However, that five-year extension now has an end date.
What players need to know
RPCS3 doesn’t provide games. Players must create their own copies from discs or digital versions using a compatible Blu-ray drive or an original PS3. It is not a storefront filled with free downloads.
This requirement highlights the inherent limitations of preservation once official sales conclude. While emulation can keep older software operational, players still need a legitimate copy to begin with.
Anyone looking to build a legal digital PS3 collection should complete their purchases before they close in their area. While RPCS3 may continue to enable those games later, it cannot provide copies for games that shoppers missed.
