As Sony concludes its support for PS3 games, RPCS3 has managed to preserve thousands of them on PC.
The open-source emulator has now identified 2,681 PS3 games as fully playable just before Sony ceases game sales on the console.
Sony is set to shut down the PlayStation Store on PS3, which will halt new purchases worldwide by July 2027. Shortly after this announcement, RPCS3 announced a significant achievement.
The open-source PS3 emulator has now classified 75% of the catalog it tracks as playable on PC. This equates to 2,681 out of 3,559 games, indicating they can be completed with satisfactory performance and without any major glitches.
RPCS3 did not highlight this milestone as a direct reply to Sony. However, the timing presents a stark contrast; as access to older PlayStation games diminishes, a preservation initiative is successfully getting more titles operational on modern systems.

Defining Playable
RPCS3 requires more than merely reaching a game's title screen for its highest compatibility rating. A game must perform adequately enough to complete it without serious issues impeding progress. Minor visual or performance glitches might still be present, meaning a flawless remaster isn’t necessarily guaranteed.
Currently, 816 games can achieve gameplay but still experience problems significant enough to prevent them from receiving that rating. Only 62 titles are restricted to menus or basic loading screens.
This classification lends weight to the 75% figure. RPCS3 hasn't inflated its numbers with numerous titles that run for a brief moment before crashing.
What Sony is Leaving Behind
Sony’s withdrawl doesn't just affect the aging PS3 storefront. They will also cease producing physical discs for all new PlayStation releases starting January 2028, meaning future games will only be available in digital formats.
The store closure will take effect earlier in certain regions, beginning in August 2026. Content already purchased will remain downloadable after the wider shutdown in July 2027, although Sony has not guaranteed permanent access.
Sony previously attempted to close the PS3 store in 2021 but reversed the decision following user backlash. However, that five-year extension now has a defined end.
What Players Need to Consider
RPCS3 does not include games; players must extract their own disc or digital copies using a compatible Blu-ray drive or an original PS3. This is not a substitute storefront filled with free downloads.
This limitation highlights the challenge of preservation once official sales cease. While emulation can facilitate the continuation of old software, players still require a legitimate copy.
Anyone aiming to build a legal digital PS3 collection should complete their purchases before the store closure in their area. While RPCS3 may enable those games to run afterward, it cannot provide copies for those they missed.

Gaming against AI may boost confidence when playing with real teammates.
It appears that losing to bots may not be as detrimental as previously thought.
Artificial intelligence is frequently blamed for diminishing social interactions. Whether it's taking the place of conversations, reducing teamwork, or making gaming feel less personal, this narrative has persisted. However, a recent study suggests the opposite might also be true. In fact, AI may be subtly encouraging individuals to engage more with their friends.
Researchers examining PUBG: Battlegrounds discovered that the inclusion of AI-controlled opponents in multiplayer matches did not lead to player isolation. Instead, it increased their confidence, kept them engaged longer, and even motivated them to team up with friends more frequently. These findings, which will be published in the journal Information Systems Research, provide an intriguing perspective on how AI can enhance user experiences rather than just automating them.
