This Game of the Year, exclusive to PS5, is now available on PC… in a way.
Sony has no plans to release PC ports for its PlayStation exclusives, yet the emulation community continues to push forward.
No one wants to wait for Grand Theft Auto VI on PC. With Rockstar currently only promising versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, recent advancements in PS5 emulation have understandably garnered significant interest.
Two open-source projects, KytyPS5 and SharpEmu, are now capable of running legitimate commercial PS5 games on computers. Both remain highly experimental, so those hoping to see GTA VI on a gaming laptop this November should temper their expectations.
The emulation of PS5 games on PC is beginning to make headway.
Reports indicate that a Discord user named RSantila successfully booted Astro Bot on PC utilizing SharpEmu, a PS5 emulator for Windows. Astro Bot, which is exclusive to PS5 in 2024, booting on a PC is a substantial achievement! The progress in PS5 emulation is noteworthy…
KytyPS5 is an open-source Windows emulator created in C++. According to its developers, it can run 2D games and a selection of 3D titles made with Unreal Engine, Unity, and proprietary technology. Screenshots from the project showcase games like Disgaea 6, Dreaming Sarah, Minecraft Legends, and Silent Hill: The Short Message in various states of operation.
However, this is far from the smooth experience expected on a genuine PS5. The project explicitly advises users to anticipate crashes, graphical glitches, poor performance, and very limited compatibility. The development focus is currently on improving software boot reliability over achieving perfect graphics or high frame rates.
SharpEmu is another fledgling project, created from the ground up in C# for Windows, Linux, and Intel-based Macs. It can load PS5 executable files, execute native CPU instructions, read game data, and perform certain graphics and kernel operations. The current testing list includes Demon’s Souls, Poppy Playtime, Silent Hill: The Short Message, and Dreaming Sarah.
Astro Bot, which launched as a PS5 exclusive in September 2024, later won Game of the Year at The Game Awards, along with accolades for game direction, action-adventure, and family game. Our own 2024 Game of the Year selection also included it. Seeing such a recent first-party title boot via an emulator is impressive, even if the experience isn't yet akin to that of a native PS console.
These projects are still striving to boot significantly older and smaller games, while Rockstar's latest open-world title is anticipated to be among the most technically demanding PS5 releases. Nevertheless, these developments play a crucial role in game preservation. As Sony transitions towards disc-free releases after January 2028, future titles will fully depend on storefronts and online services. Thus, functional emulators could someday provide an alternative means of access for legally owned games once the original ecosystem becomes obsolete.
