Apple is getting ready to launch an OLED iPad mini in October as it broadens its tablet range.
Apple is set to launch an OLED iPad mini featuring an A19 Pro chip by October, marking its most significant update in five years. Sources close to the situation reveal that the company is planning a major redesign of the iPad mini. The existing model has retained its design since 2021, with only a chip upgrade two years ago. Bloomberg reported about the refreshed tablet, which is said to have the codename J510.
The upcoming mini will incorporate an LTPS OLED screen instead of the more advanced LTPO technology used in the iPad Pro, leading to a fixed refresh rate of 60 hertz, unlike the variable refresh rate of the Pro. Additionally, it will be powered by an A19 Pro chip, which is an upgrade from the A17 Pro in the current version. These details are based on unnamed sources, and Apple has not confirmed this information.
In addition to the mini, Apple is working on an updated base model iPad, codenamed J581, set for early 2027, which will include a faster processor but no significant redesign. New iPad Air models in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes are expected to launch in spring 2027, while the standard iPad will continue to use LCD screens for the time being.
The target launch in October aligns with what appears to be one of Apple's busiest Septembers in years, where the company is anticipated to reveal a foldable iPhone along with the iPhone 18 Pro series, new Apple Watch variants, and updated Mac computers. Bloomberg forecasts a six percent growth in iPad revenue, nearing $30 billion for the current fiscal year.
The transition to OLED may raise the price of the mini, as Apple has already implemented price increases across its product range. The current mini starts at $599, up from $499 due to a global memory chip shortage that prompted Apple to raise prices in June. Moreover, Apple is also working on redesigned iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models for 2027, indicating a broader strategy influenced by design aspirations and rising component costs.
The anticipated foldable iPhone, expected to retail around $2,000 with an approximately eight-inch display when unfolded, will be positioned significantly above the mini in Apple's product line, despite comparable display sizes when opened. This positions the mini as Apple's most budget-friendly option for a large portable screen, assuming the OLED technology does not make it unaffordable. It remains uncertain whether Apple can release an OLED iPad mini by October while coping with the memory shortages that have affected Mac and iPad production throughout the year, a question that Bloomberg's sources did not address.
