Google has changed the name of NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and has extended code execution capabilities to Pro users.
Google is changing the name of NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and broadening its cloud code execution capabilities, which were previously exclusive to Ultra subscribers, to include Pro subscribers as well. The rebranding integrates one of Google's most favored AI tools into the Gemini brand while allowing it to remain an independent resource. On Thursday, the company announced that the name change reflects how closely the research assistant has been integrated into the wider Google ecosystem, including the Gemini app and Google Search. Currently, over 30 million users and more than 600,000 organizations utilize the tool, which was originally launched as Project Tailwind at I/O 2023.
This name update comes with a notable enhancement to the tool's most advanced feature. Last month, Google provided each notebook with a secure cloud computer designed to write and execute code based on a user's uploaded materials, facilitating complex data analysis, charts, and new output formats like spreadsheets and slide presentations. Initially, this update was available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers and a select few Workspace business accounts, but with the transition to Gemini Notebook, Google will extend this feature to AI Pro users on the web in the upcoming weeks.
The cloud computing environment is capable of running Python scripts within a secure container, processing tables, and directly generating visualizations from users' uploaded documents. According to Digital Trends, the update from June also transitioned the tool to a new reasoning engine and added capabilities for generating PDFs and structured data files. Google has not disclosed when, or if, users on the free tier will have access to the code execution feature.
In addition to the name change, Google is incorporating notebooks into more areas of its product range. Users can already create and manage notebooks directly in the Gemini app, with complete synchronization between the two platforms. Google also intends to integrate notebooks into AI Mode within Search, though no timeline has been provided for this feature, which would place the research tool alongside the AI-driven search interface that currently serves over one billion users monthly.
This rebranding continues a trend where Google incorporates successful experimental products into the Gemini brand. The fundamental purpose of NotebookLM, which emphasizes basing AI responses solely on user-supplied information rather than general web content, remains intact. Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, the Gemini app, and AI Studio, oversees the product and detailed Google's broader AI integration strategy at I/O 2026 this past May.
It remains uncertain whether the Gemini Notebook name will enhance or detract from the product's identity. NotebookLM established its reputation due to its distinctiveness from the chatbot-style Gemini experience, and some users might interpret the rebranding as an indication that Google values brand cohesion over the tool's unique character. While the tool has improved significantly, its name now signifies an AI brand that Google has associated with various products, ranging from laptops to smart glasses.
