Version 4.1 introduces extensive RAW format compatibility to Android, with an iOS version expected shortly.

If you capture images in RAW format and edit them on your mobile device, Google’s free photo editing application, Snapseed, has become significantly more beneficial. An updated version of the app on Android has added support for a wide range of RAW formats that it previously could not process.

      What's new in Snapseed v4.1

The major enhancement in this release is the expanded RAW support. According to a post by the Snapseed team on Reddit, version 4.1 includes most major formats and cameras available today, such as Sony’s ARW, Canon’s CR3, Nikon’s NEF, Fujifilm’s RAF, Olympus’ ORF, Pentax’s PEF, and the generic DNG format. The post mentions that a few formats “aren’t quite there yet,” but the decision was made to release the update without waiting for complete coverage.

Additionally, the update includes undo and redo options within individual editing tools, allowing users to reverse changes without having to navigate back to the main editing screen. This minor adjustment should enhance the efficiency of making detailed edits.

The rollout is gradual, and there may be bugs.

Snapseed 4.1 is being rolled out in phases to identify any significant bugs before it is made available to everyone. As a result, you may not see the new RAW support right away. The team has also indicated that a few bugs could still arise despite thorough internal testing, encouraging users to report any issues they encounter to expedite fixes. An iOS update is anticipated soon, although a specific release date has not been announced yet.

This update builds upon Snapseed’s significant redesign from earlier this year, which included the introduction of a built-in camera with real-time film emulation features, initially launched on iOS in February. The added RAW support significantly enhances the app, making it a viable option for both professionals and casual users.
