Claude identified the issue with my washing machine in just a few minutes, and it was completely free of charge.
Earlier this week, my washing machine chose the worst time to stop working. One moment it was effectively washing a load of laundry, and the next it had completely frozen, leaving me with a drum full of wet, soapy clothes and a cryptic error code ‘ES’ flashing on its display. It was just a random assortment of letters that meant nothing to me.
Like many people, I quickly turned to Reddit and Google. Surely someone else had encountered this issue, right? Instead, I found myself in the typical rabbit hole of forum discussions where every answer seemed to contradict the previous one. One individual insisted it was a clogged filter, another pointed to the motor, while someone else claimed the machine was irreparable and that buying a new one would be more sensible. Regardless, I worked through the basic fixes: I unplugged it for a bit, cleaned the filter, checked for obstructions, but the washer stubbornly refused to revive. Eventually, I sought help from Claude. Before you question my priorities, no, I wasn't trying to replace a repair technician with AI. I just wanted to exhaust all possible fixes myself before admitting defeat and making a call.
As a last resort, I consulted Claude.
Instead of entering the error code into yet another search engine, I took a picture of the washing machine's display with my phone. I uploaded the image to Claude and provided all the details I had: the brand and model, what had happened, the error code displayed, and the troubleshooting steps I had already taken. I didn’t expect much beyond a generic list of possible issues. But that’s not what transpired.
Rather than immediately identifying the malfunction, Claude took its time and began to ask questions. That’s one of the aspects I appreciate most about using it. It doesn’t rush to give an answer just because it can. Instead, it sought more context. Was there still water left in the drum? Could I hear the drain pump attempting to engage? Had I washed something unusually heavy before the machine stopped? That last question made me pause, because, yes, I had. I remembered that I had added a bulky bath mat along with several thick towels, and upon reflection, I had likely overloaded the drum more than usual. This was the first time throughout the entire experience that I started to ponder if perhaps I had done something that triggered the problem.
The solution turned out to be almost embarrassingly simple.
What I appreciated even more was the minimal effort required to address those follow-up questions. Claude transformed them into straightforward multiple-choice prompts, so rather than crafting lengthy explanations, I simply tapped the option that matched what I was observing. With that additional context, the situation became much clearer. Claude clarified that the error code didn’t actually indicate a faulty motor or a malfunctioning control board, contrary to what I had read earlier. It was much more likely to be a drainage issue. Given the heavy, overloaded cycle I had just completed, there was a strong possibility that something had shifted, clogged the pump, or obstructed the drain pathway.
It then guided me through the checks step by step. First, I examined the drain hose at the back of the machine. Then, I checked the pump filter hidden behind a small flap near the bottom—the same filter I believed I had cleaned properly, but apparently, I hadn’t. Inside was a solitary sock wrapped around a thick clump of lint, both wedged right against the pump’s impeller. I removed everything, reinserted the filter, and initiated a quick rinse cycle, fully expecting another error to appear. Instead, the washer drained perfectly, spun as if nothing had happened, and continued its routine. After hours of Googling, second-guessing, and even being warned that I might need a new machine, the fix took all of five minutes.
To clarify, this wasn’t an AI miracle. It worked solely because I provided Claude with a detailed prompt. I attached a photo of the error code, shared the precise brand details, explained the situation, listed everything I had already attempted, and responded to its follow-up questions as accurately as possible. The more context it had, the more beneficial its advice became.
Of course, there are limitations. Claude couldn’t physically inspect the machine or confirm if a part was defective. If the motor or control board had indeed failed, I would have still needed to call a repair technician. What impressed me was not that it repaired my washing machine, but how it simplified the process. Rather than bombarding me with numerous potential causes, it asked the right questions, eliminated the improbable scenarios, and provided a logical starting point. That really helped prevent me from fearing the worst.
The whole experience cost me nothing.
Had I jumped straight to the worst-case scenario, I could have ended up replacing a washing machine that didn’t actually require replacement. Instead, I spent about ten minutes consulting with Claude and ended up extracting a tiny sock from the pump filter. I’m
