Anthropic pledges $10 million towards AI research in Canada, collaborating with eight institutions.

Anthropic is investing $10 million CAD in eight Canadian research institutions to support the development of beneficial and responsible AI applications. The partnerships include Canada's top regional AI institutes: Amii in Edmonton, Mila in Montréal, and the Vector Institute in Toronto, as well as the children's hospital CHEO, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Université Laval, the University of Toronto, and the University of Saskatchewan.

The funding will encompass various research fields such as reinforcement learning, AI safety, mental health, Indigenous languages, and quantum computing. Mila plans to use Claude to create AI assistants that aid researchers in discovering and evaluating scientific innovations. The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics at CAMH will develop predictive models for mental health treatments and conduct fairness assessments of psychiatric AI systems. Université Laval will investigate the behavior of large language models in different cultural contexts, focusing on Quebec French and Indigenous languages.

Anthropic has also issued its inaugural Canadian country brief via the Anthropic Economic Index, revealing that Canada ranks eighth globally in Claude usage but second in per-capita adoption, with Canadians utilizing Claude at more than four times the expected rate based on population. The US is the only country with higher usage rates. The data correlates with the local economy, showing that translation requests are most significant in provinces with higher numbers of government employees, reflecting Canada’s bilingualism obligations. British Columbia leads in per-person usage, with Ontario following closely. In May, Anthropic pledged $200 million to a Gates Foundation partnership, and this Canadian investment continues its trend of establishing non-commercial relationships alongside its enterprise business.

This summer, Anthropic will integrate Amii, Mila, and Vector into its startup program, providing hundreds of associated Canadian startups with a minimum of $5,000 USD each in API credits. Co-founder Chris Olah remarked, “Many of the foundations of modern AI originated in Toronto, Montréal, and Edmonton, as did numerous researchers dedicated to ensuring its safety.” Anthropic has been strategically increasing Claude’s footprint across enterprise, government, and academic sectors, fostering both distribution and reliance across all areas simultaneously.
