The upcoming "flagship killer" is being developed by Motorola, but it might not arrive in the US in the near future.
Motorola is developing its most ambitious smartphone in the Edge 70 series, but it may not be released in the United States.
With features like a 7,000-nit display and MagSafe-style magnetic wireless charging, this phone certainly belongs in the flagship conversation, signaling Motorola's intent to break the mold.
So, what's inside the Motorola Edge 70 Max?
Set to launch in India on July 15, the Edge 70 Max is driven by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, which also powers the OnePlus 15R that we reviewed earlier this year. Currently, it ranks as Qualcomm’s third most powerful chip, following the 8 Elite and the 8 Elite Gen 5.
In addition to handling heavy multitasking and gaming at 120fps, the chipset performs well under prolonged use. To assist with cooling, the phone will include a 5,000mm² ActivMesh vapor chamber.
Motorola intends to pair the SoC with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, though the exact storage options are yet to be revealed. On the display side, users will receive a QHD+ LTPO AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, offering 10-bit color and, as previously noted, a peak brightness of 7,000 nits.
What about battery performance?
The OnePlus 15 and 15R have batteries of 7,300 mAh and 7,400 mAh, respectively. The Edge 70 Max will compete closely with a 7,100 mAh battery that supports 90W wired charging.
However, unlike the OnePlus 15R and most other mid-range Android smartphones (around $500), the Edge 70 Max includes built-in 25W magnetic wireless charging, akin to Apple’s MagSafe and Google’s Pixelsnap standards.
This is quite rare, especially since only the HMD Skyline and Pixel 10 series support native magnetic wireless charging in the mainstream Android market.
The company will reveal the pricing on July 15, 2026, during the official launch. I expect the device to be priced between INR 50,000 to 60,000, or approximately $520 to $630. A higher price might put it in competition with established flagships.
Could the Edge 70 Max be the next flagship killer?
Unfortunately, Motorola has not confirmed any plans for a U.S. release, and there are no credible leaks suggesting it will arrive either. This is disappointing, as the Edge 70 Max represents the kind of aggressively specced mid-to-upper-range phone that American consumers currently have limited options for.
From its specifications, it's evident that Motorola is serious about solidifying its position in the mid-range market, offering near-flagship hardware at a more affordable price.
If the company manages to launch the Edge 70 Max at a competitive rate, especially given the saturated Indian smartphone market, it would easily be among the top recommendations.
