Zuckerberg: an AI cloud venture for Meta 'is logical'

Mark Zuckerberg has officially announced that Meta is looking into an AI cloud business, stating that selling computing power “makes sense,” thus validating the previously reported “Meta Compute” initiative. This move would position Meta in competition with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, while also posing a threat to neocloud companies like CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN, which experienced a decline following the news, even though Meta is one of their major clients. The strategy aims to capitalize on Meta’s significant investment exceeding $100 billion in AI infrastructure, despite the cloud sector generally having lower profit margins than Meta’s core advertising business.

Zuckerberg's confirmation aligns with earlier reports that suggested Meta was considering launching a venture called Meta Compute to utilize its spare AI capacity for rental. The rationale is quite clear: Meta's heavy investment in AI infrastructure this year could be offset by generating revenue from surplus computing power.

This would be a groundbreaking step for Meta, as it has never previously offered cloud services outside of the company, unlike Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Goldman Sachs projects this market could grow to $2 trillion by 2030.

The planned service might resemble competitors’ offerings, allowing access to Meta’s AI models similar to how AWS provides services through Bedrock, alongside raw computing power akin to what neoclouds offer. Reports suggest Meta considered running its own models, including the proprietary Muse Spark, on this platform.

The reaction from the market was starkly divided. Meta's stock rose approximately 9% following the announcement, while shares of neocloud providers CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN saw significant declines.

The competition posed to these companies is clear, as their business model revolves around GPU rental, and the entry of a major player like Meta with substantial financial resources alters the competitive landscape dramatically. Interestingly, Meta is a key customer for these firms, having invested about $35 billion into CoreWeave alone, purchasing the very capacity it now seeks to resell.

However, transitioning into selling cloud services presents its own challenges. Cloud offerings are reliant on contracts, customer support, and guarantees of reliability, and Wall Street has pointed out that this sector typically features lower profit margins compared to Meta's advertising revenue stream. Competing against established neoclouds, including CoreWeave and fast-expanding entities like Nscale, means Meta would be starting from a more foundational level than its existing infrastructure might imply.

For the time being, while the idea is promising and has been publicly articulated, it remains a long way from becoming a realized product. Nevertheless, a company with access to vast AI computing resources has strong motivation to monetize its unused silicon, and Zuckerberg has now openly indicated this intention.
