Sony reenters the professional in-ear monitor market with the IER-M500.
Showcasing a new dynamic driver, excellent passive noise isolation, and a design fit for the stage, the IER-M500 is aimed at live performers.
Sony is making its return to the professional in-ear monitor (IEM) market with the announcement of the IER-M500, a pair of stage-oriented earphones suitable for both budding musicians and experienced performers. Rather than pursuing features like active noise cancellation or spatial audio for casual listening, the IER-M500 is designed specifically to ensure that artists can hear themselves clearly during live performances.
Engineered for the stage rather than daily commuting, the IER-M500 incorporates a newly developed dynamic driver, a spacious acoustic chamber, and an optimized internal acoustic setup. Sony claims this combination produces controlled deep bass alongside clear high-frequency details, allowing performers to monitor vocals and instruments accurately, even in noisy settings. The earphones are also compatible with Hi-Res Audio, offering a broad frequency response for enhanced sound reproduction.
Instead of depending on active noise cancellation, Sony emphasizes high passive noise isolation. A fully sealed design, thin polyurethane noise-isolating ear tips, and a sizable acoustic chamber collectively block external noise from the stage, enabling musicians to hear more clearly without raising the monitoring volume.
Comfort is another crucial aspect. Co-developed with monitoring engineers, the IER-M500 includes Sony’s proprietary ear-fitting supports, flexible ear hooks, four sizes of ear tips, and a 1.6-meter detachable cable built for frequent stage use. The moisture-resistant earphones will be offered in Clear, Black, and Red & Blue transparent finishes, with clearly marked left and right earpieces for faster setup prior to performances.
With the introduction of the IER-M500, Sony is addressing a gap in its professional audio offerings. The company states that the new IEMs complement existing products such as the MDR-M1 studio headphones, microphones, and the 360 Reality Audio ecosystem, broadening its creator-focused lineup from recording and mixing to live stage monitoring.
The Sony IER-M500 is currently available for pre-order in the U.S. for $119.99, positioning it as one of the more affordable professional in-ear monitors in Sony’s range. While not targeted at everyday consumers, musicians and performers seeking reliable, stage-ready monitoring now have an additional option from a brand returning to a category it has significantly influenced.
