Is the Galaxy Z Flip 8 potentially Samsung's final compact foldable? A recent leak suggests that it could be.

Samsung is set to reveal the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 at an event in London on July 22. However, ahead of the launch, tipster Ice Universe has made an unexpected assertion: the Galaxy Z Flip 8 might be Samsung’s final compact foldable. This claim is hard to accept at first glance. While Samsung's Fold models receive significant attention for their tablet-like displays, the Flip series has consistently been seen as the more mainstream choice. It’s more compact, easier to carry, and typically less expensive than the Fold. More crucially, it tends to catch people’s eyes in daily use.
Its compact design, cover display, and even its “cute factor” have helped Samsung attract consumers who would typically shy away from a bulkier foldable. Based on my observations, I have seen many more Flip phones in everyday settings compared to Fold models. This doesn’t imply that the Fold lacks popularity, but the Flip appears to resonate with a wider audience.
So, why would Samsung consider discontinuing it?
The timing of this speculation is noteworthy, as the smartphone sector is currently grappling with rising component costs. Prices for storage and RAM have become a growing issue, prompting manufacturers to increase their prices. Once a few key brands raise their prices, it becomes easier for others to do the same.
Foldables are inherently costly to produce. They require flexible screens, intricate hinges, and specialized components. A compact foldable like the Flip has to integrate all these elements into a smaller design, making engineering expenses even more challenging. If Samsung were to reevaluate the Flip series, it would likely be driven by financial considerations, possibly deciding that concentrating on larger foldables yields better profit margins as production costs continue to escalate.
Why this rumor is significant
For many users, the Flip serves as the most approachable entry into the foldable world. The Fold can feel like a device meant for productivity enthusiasts, while the Flip resembles a standard smartphone that simply folds in half. The disappearance of this option would render foldables much less accessible. This is also why this speculation is sparking such widespread conversation. If Samsung withdraws from the compact foldable market, it could create an opportunity for competitors like Motorola to fill that void.

For the time being, it’s crucial to maintain realistic expectations. Samsung has yet to announce any intention to discontinue the Flip series, and tipster claims don’t always pan out. Until the company communicates otherwise, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 should be seen as a continuation in Samsung’s foldable lineup—not necessarily its concluding edition. Nevertheless, if this rumor turns out to be accurate, July 22 could signify much more than just another product launch; it could represent the farewell to one of the most recognizable foldable phone designs available.

Rumblings of a $300 price increase for the iPhone 18 Pro series seem increasingly credible
Memory costs, a new 2nm chip, and a margin squeeze that Apple can’t completely mitigate.
A third independent supply chain analysis is now aligning with the previous two: the iPhone 18 Pro Max will see a higher launch price. Additionally, Apple may have to accept a slightly reduced margin on this device compared to its other products. Counterpoint Research's bill-of-materials estimate for the 12GB plus 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max indicates a cost increase of nearly $300 compared to the same configuration in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
