The BYD Seal 08 is making waves with a price tag below $30,000, offering a serious competition to the Tesla Model 3.
More range, more interior space, more features, all for less than a Tesla Model 3. Just not available in the US yet.
The Tesla Model 3 has set the standard for what a premium and functional EV should cost over the years; that’s what we are accustomed to. However, BYD believes that price point is significantly inflated.
The Chinese manufacturer has introduced a new flagship sedan, the Seal 08, which is packed with features typically not found in this segment, merging the gap between affordability and luxury. After examining its specifications, the pricing is what surprises me most.
So, what does BYD’s new flagship bring to the table?
At 5,150 mm in length with a 3,030 mm wheelbase, the BYD Seal 08 is a large, five-seater luxury sedan designed for those who seek spacious and comfortable travel.
The car is available with two powertrain options: all-electric and plug-in hybrid. The electric versions utilize BYD’s 800V platform alongside second-generation Blade battery technology, boasting approximately 562 miles of CLTC range on a single charge for the highest trim.
The PHEV model features a 1.5T petrol engine combined with dual electric motors yielding 400 kW, and a 45.36 kWh battery capable of providing 249 miles of all-electric driving and a total range of 1,031 miles.
Remarkably, despite its size, the vehicle has a turning radius of only 4.95 meters, and a DiSus-A closed dual-chamber air suspension system that anticipates road conditions with preview sensors and adjusts damping before encountering bumps.
How is the pricing structured?
Inside, you’ll find an astonishing array of features for the price. This includes dual zero-gravity front seats with massage and ventilation for all passengers, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, and a 26-inch augmented-reality navigation display.
Now, for the surprising part—this starts at 196,900 yuan (around $28,980) for both the base PHEV and base EV. The top-tier EV with a 905 km range costs about $31,920, while the all-wheel-drive flagship EV reaches up to $35,300.
In comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD starts at $42,490 in the U.S. and offers an EPA-estimated range of 363 miles with dual-motor all-wheel drive. While none of the Seal 08’s impressive features are currently offered in the US, it clearly illustrates the value and features BYD provides at a competitive price.

You can now purchase a frunk fridge for your Model Y directly from Tesla. The $595 Dual Zone Fridge fits perfectly in the frunk of the Model Y and operates using the vehicle's 12V outlet. It’s part of a broader Summer Collection that also includes accessories for the Cybertruck.
If you enjoy taking road trips with your Tesla, there’s good news. Tesla has updated its shop with a new Summer Collection featuring camping and outdoor gear specifically designed for your vehicle, addressing various challenges you might face on the road.
Tesla has also launched the six-seat Model Y Long Wheelbase in the US, offering additional space, comfort, and a range of up to 325 miles. This extended electric SUV introduces a three-row, six-seat configuration aimed at making family road trips much more enjoyable.
A recent incident involving a stolen Kia highlights the limitations of connected car technology. Kia can track the location of your stolen vehicle, but due to GDPR laws, they cannot share this information in real time, presenting a significant issue.
If you assume that connected car technology will help in recovering a stolen vehicle, you may need to adjust those expectations. A recent case in the UK, where a car owner had three tracking devices installed yet could not retrieve his vehicle, led the manufacturer to clarify that this technology is not intended as a “certified security vehicle tracker.”
